Nice story OP. I get a bit tired of DDing the e30 sometimes, although all is forgiven when I finally get time to take the car out somewhere where I can wind it out & drive it as intended.

This may be so, but that's what happens when it's value becomes astronomical, and the owner views it as an investment.

Why risk trashing something worth tens of thousands of dollars for a joy ride?

That's what new cars are for!

That was my point, but it doesn't make it any less sad for the car. Besides, if you have a decent chance of trashing said car on a joyride it probably wasn't meant for you anyway. Not you specifically, the general you.

Its funny seeing someone so enthusiastic about new(ish) ownership. a lot of us here DD our e30 so the excitement tends to fade till we hit a canyon, or windy road, or come face to face with a shitty honda kid who thinks his exhaust note makes him go faster. But still man, start to use that damn thing more. No car deserves the sad life of a garage unless it is an absolute show stopper and worthy of awards.

I drive it often. But a lot of the driving involves road trips of 2-300 miles late at night and e30 headlights kinda suck. And my customers are mostly pickup driving types that don't particularly assign trust to those who show up
In a "little white yuppie car". The rest of my driving requires seating for three kids (beat up odyssey). Beyond that I usually drive the e30...enough so that my non car guy neighbors think I'm loony

Okay I totally agree that that's one way of looking at it however my bike is long gone since I've had kids for years now and my whole point was that I was excited by the experience of driving my car on some roads that I rarely have time to drive on

I wanted to contrast the e30 against a car (993) that many would agree is much more fulfilling

Beyond that I'm not going to dignify your petty comments any further

And I would argue that NO car deserves a garaged life, regardless of its value. Some of the least-driven cars in the world today were most specifically designed to be grabbed by the neck and chucked down some windy roads...too bad those days are over for them.

Good point, some people do probably get used to how awesome the E30 is and forget about it. Not having been able to drive mine for over 5 months, I definitely appreciate it now that I can.

I'd love to drive it around OR

I got my e30 a year ago and have probably put 3 or 4k miles on it. I drive a lot for work and like to drive it over my bangled 530. Heat cold rain or whatever just not snow. Goes to bed in November until may. tonight I got some stares from some young kids. My car looks stock with bottle caps and all, nothing flashy, and they still know it's something special. When I was 14 (1987) I shot 2 rolls of film of a white e30 318 with a body kit sitting outside a restaurant in Bozeman. I'd love to find those photos today.

Had an opportunity to take my car to some meetings today on some twisty se MN and western WI roads that I used to violate with my speed triple today. Had a blast. Makes me wonder why I just bought a 993. When I get home and see that sexy thing in the garage it will come back to me. But damn the e30 is fun...balanced.
