Mechanically, there will be parts for quite a long time.

Aesthetically, those parts have been and will continue to be phased out. They care that the ones on the road do continue to run well, but don't care so much about making and selling new panels to keep them looking good.

It's incentive for you to trade up and spend WAY more money buying a new, nice looking car from them. ;)

Then you get the enjoyment of factory parts that have been outsourced to a new manufacturer, who doesn't build them to original specifications. It could be anything from material, to dimension, to quality. Then you can deal with returns and wait times hoping the "next" one is better.

This is the life of parts for E9 CS Coupes, and some 2002 parts. E30's will be next....

actually, on a much more positive note - they put together a special classics restoration facility to prevent this type of thing from closing us out, i read about it quite a while ago when I first got into the scene

BMW wants thier older cars on the road running and looking good. this is important because it keeps thier fan base alive and well, it's great advertising when the public sees BMW's 30 years old still running around and it's a great company. this is why they started Mobile Tradition. http://www.carscoops.com/2007/08/bmw...s-for-old.html

incidently, it's just not BMW, Mercedes and Porsche also has similar programs.

As long as there is demand, there will be supplies
...but probably not from BMW. I'd say we're about due to go NLA on a lot of stuff any day now...

And that 'mobile tradition' 2002 they built a few years back? Naw, just a resto of an older shell...

That "center" isn't close to actually existing. A little while ago I was emailing a number of guys in bmw classic to schedule a tour and a couple meetings. Turns out they were scattered around in different buildings and operating on a shoe string. It makes for a great PR stunt but doesn't hold much water in reality, I do hold onto a bit of optimism though.

Given that M20 oil pumps and euro pistons are now nla, it'll be interesting to see what happens to e30 oem parts in the future.
