Been thinking of picking up a teardrop camper to tow behind my e30 for trips next summer. Anyone done it before?

Not a tear drop camper but I have used Uhual's 5'x8' trailer (2nd smallest) and packed it to the brim to help a friend move. His bed, furniture, computer, life time worth of porn, and the lot from San Diego all the way to nashville. The m20 instantly felt like an m42 but beyond some steep slopes, in 2nd gear, the 325i made it cross country without a hitch and on average probably -5-8 in mpg.

Ya I have towed a decent amount of weight behind my e30 before but never a camper of any kind. Supposedly they mostly weigh between 700-900lbs depending on equipment. The m50 in my car seemed to handle it pretty well but the brakes felt like they could use an upgrade.Your signature picture has been removed since it contained the Photobucket "upgrade your account" image.

1000# should tow with relatively no problem. You could have 1000# of passengers easily. Tongue weight would be what to watch out for. I'd say 200# or less on the tongue and your good.
I towed a 15' travel trailer with my 87 535is with a terrible bumper hitch and it was godawful. It was probably 3000# and 400# tongue weight.Originally posted by Andy.BWhenever I am about to make a particularly questionable decision regarding a worryingly cheap diy solution, I just ask myself, "What would Ether-D do?"

Everything you need to camp for weeks on end can fit in your trunk, including a queen size air mattress, 3 pillows, a sleeping bag and tent. Camp stove, 5gal clean water tank. Why even bother with a camper. Even with carrying a toolbox and jack to fix whatever you need to on the side of the road, thousands of miles from home. Even with all of your clothing (10 days worth), several pairs of shoes and rain gear. Even with a TON of stuff you really don't need, but brought anyways.

Seriously. You can fix an E30 with chewing gum, bailing wire and duct tape. There's still lots of room for camping gear (lets assume no kids, this is an E30 we're talking about).
Modern BMWs require a laptop, the "cloud", multiple super computers, and probably the Hubble Space Telescope. And thats just to extract the codes to tell you the gas cap isn't quite closed all the way.

And, to top it off, I had all of that in there WITH A SUB!
