There aren't too may plastic bellows and parts you can't visually remove and inspect in an hour or so. Just a idea. There is also the Propane way of doing it, or the "carb start" fluid way too. Just don't use any carb stuff on a painted engine block.
I've only had a smoke test done on my car for an exhaust leak. The muffler guy used an oxy-acetylene torch, blew a hole into the exhaust pipe, and then turned off the oxygen to make a nasty cloud of black smoke and put it in my downpipe.
