Any Known problems with E30?
Provide some specifics on the car (year and model), and we can provide you with better info.
If it's a 325, the only major thing you'll need to worry about is ensuring the timing belt is done at the recommended intervals. That's one of the only maintenance items that won't show any signs of failure until it's too late, and cause some serious damage.
Otherwise the cars are pretty solid overall. Obviously being ~30 years old, they will require maintenance.
This. And your guibo. It can remodel you transmission tunnel if it lets go.
OP, don't mind them. They have nothing else better to do but give the new guys crap because they don't really know much, being new to the cars and all. Once you get through the "noobie" stage, which consists of people giving you crap over every little slip up, as well as general hazing, the guys here are very knowledgeable (most of em atleast
) and most are willing to help. That's just how R3v is, everyone goes through hazing.
Welcome to R3v.Last edited by HennaE30; 11-06-2014, 08:56 PM.Originally posted by flyboyxhow about if i yank the anal beads out of your ass like i'm trying to pull start a chain saw?Originally posted by Northernbeer is my new liver cleanse.

One thing to watch out for is poped tires.
Seriously though:
- rust
- timing belt (I'm of the opinion that of you can't 100% confirm when this was last done, do it immediately for peace of mind)
- sloppy shifters (just buy a refresh kit)
- I've seen more than a few with worn out clutch fans which results in the engine over heating when not moving
- blown hood shocks so the hood falls on your head when you least expect it
- locks not working
- heater blowers go
Plus much much more. E30s are a different kind of beast. Once you drive one you feel an obligation to maintain and rejuvenate it. Also, it's more addictive than crack.
Enjoy!1976 2002, 1987 325is, s50 1991 touring, 1996 328i vert

Yeah, IMS bearing (or at least related to it) I have to drop the engine when I get back to the states.
So much sarcasm on this thread, I almost didn't log back in. Glad I did. I haven't done the research, and this was my first stop to get some info. Bought the car as part of an inheritance from my father in law, and haven't even driven it yet. I am overseas, trying to order parts to work on when I return to the states.
Yeah, reading my first post, I came off pretty full of BS. I'm not a poser, but I've always focused my attention on my other cars, and the BMWs have just been DDs and beaters in Germany.
Thanks for the info, and I'll stick around for a while.Porsche-BMW... All the same, right?Comment

Considering all the sh*t I received for my first post, I was afraid to ask what a guibo is. I found a few posts on it. Is this something I just need to inspect, or is there a cheap upgrade?
And I found some old blinker fluid on the shelf next to my wire stretcher. Does it expire, cuz it ain't blinking any more.Last edited by iflylow; 11-08-2014, 01:32 AM.Porsche-BMW... All the same, right?Comment

This is the main reason why we give the new guys crap. So they search for things before asking about them.
To answer your question, inspect it, and if it's worn replace it. It's not really expensive.Originally posted by flyboyxhow about if i yank the anal beads out of your ass like i'm trying to pull start a chain saw?Originally posted by Northernbeer is my new liver cleanse.

Congratulations on your e30 purchase! You will most likely love it here since you've stayed thus far.
As others have said, timing belt if you don't know when it's last been done. Have the car inspected before you waste money on parts you may not need. I consider these pretty reliable cars.sigpicOriginally posted by e30hijinksI move faster than "the speed of light."
