    Fire extinguisher...do YOU have one?

Looking into a couple of options. I want something that's compact enough to fit under my passenger seat, yet is in a bracket that won't allow movement under "spirited" drives.

Anyone here have one they are running? prefer one with a metal bracket

    thanks
If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna cost ya!

I've got one in the trunk of my car (dry chemical) - one of the Kidde models from the local store. i got creative & made a mount for it on the mouse fur in the trunk so it stays put. I also have another one (Halon - from Summit Racing) inside that's strapped near the floor behind the driver's seat. I didn't want to drill any holes so I got creative with some heavy zip ties. It came with a metal bracket but seems to stay put well enough.

Two fire extinguishers in a car you ask? Bad experience a few years back with a mouse nest in the heater box on my e34. And... working for an insurance company will make one a bit paranoid, I guess. I look at a lot of total burns.... 8)

ya know....its funny you should mention this. a couple weeks ago, i was driving home from spending the day working on one of my rentals. i was talking on the phone and it was almost dark. i ran up on an accident that had just happened. there was a trailer jackknifed in the road in front of me. i slammed on my brakes and came within 30-50 feet of hitting it. made a quick head check to my right and since there was no one beside me, i switched lanes to avoid the flat bed. as i was driving by the wreck, there was a toyota corrola sitting in the middle oncoming lane. since the driver was still in the car, i pulled off, got out of my truck to see if they were ok. i approached the car and the inside was full of smoke. i noticed the air bags had deployed and the passenger bag was actually sitting on the passenger seat along with the metal housing that it would normally reside inside the dash. i assumed the smoke was from the bags. i opened both doors on the driver's side of the car and started talking to the guy laying in the driver's seat. he was conscious but unresponsive. he was hispanic and his english wasn't very stellar. i asked him to tell me his name and he gave me a bunch of gibberish. i didn't want to pull him out of the car because i couldn't tell how bad he was hurt and didn't want to make any injuries worse. i took a walk around the car and looked around inside to make sure there weren't any babies in the back. i took a look at the flat bed trailer he collided with. about 30-40 seconds later, i went back to check on the guy. by this time, there was fire shooting out of the location in the dash where the passenger airbag should have been. i would say the flames were perhaps a foot or two away from the guy. at this point, i decided any injuries would be pretty insignificant to being burned alive. i yelled at him that his car was in fire and we needed to get him out NOW! i asked him to give me his hands so i could pull him out. i simply looked at me like i was from another planet. i reached in, grabbed his wrists and pulled him out of the car. once he was out, i didn't know what to do with him, so i fireman's carried him over to my truck and put him in the driver's seat. i reached in the back seat for my fire extinguisher and turned toward the corrola. perhaps 60 seconds later(maybe much less-it was one of those situations where time moves along in slow motion), this is what it looked like:

i figured the extinguisher would be like pissing on a forest fire by this point. i still think its a good idea though.

by the time the fire trucks rolled up:

the fire station is only about 1 mile up the road(behind the trucks)

the corner of the rear bumper of my truck is just barely visible on the far right side of this pic.

They have a term for people like you flyboyx...something like hero I think. Well done. Yeah I keep one in my trunk, just wedged in enough to keep it from flying around, but not mounted if I needed it in a jiff

Yep, I usually see a couple of "burn" spots a month like that on the side of I-90 on my way into Cleveland during the week...

I have an Amerex 10lb extinguisher with a HD automotive bracket, I've had it in my last couple cars but I am just waiting until I have my back seat out for my upcoming subwoofer install so I can mount it on the bottom of the package shelf. I would prefer to keep it in the car, but I don't want it visible and can't come up with an out-of-the-way place for it. I had a fuel leak recently and was wishing IU had it just in case.

NYE 15 years ago I put out a burning S10 Blazer on the side of I-75 in Ohio with a tiny Kidde extinguisher I had acquired somewhere. Only a small fire, but it was underneath near the driveline and everyone was just standing around looking at it cluelessly. We were running late for a party in Cincinnati so as soon as it was out it was like "You good? We out." and everyone kinda looked at us funny, I don't even think were were stopped for 5 minutes.

trunk is cool and all, just a hassle to get to in an emergency situation(not as convenient).

I'd think that having one within reach when your in the drivers seat is the best place to keep it when trouble strikes.

so true! I'm going to rethink. Especially if you are rear ended and the trunk is inop

I have one in the 1600 mounted to the front of the driver's seat. I should move it to the passenger side, but it doesn't bother me.

6 fuses regulate the entire electrical system in my car. That's a recipe for a successful car fire.
