    Body shop estimates?

Would anyone know on average how much it would cost to repair this in the central NJ area. And would it even be worth it or should it be better if insurance totaled the car.

the fact that the cars worth basically nothing (to the insurance company) they would deffinitely total it

if you wanna keep the car, let them total it, buy it back and use the money to have it fixed (assuming the accident wasnt your fault and the other persons ins is gonna pay up..

if you dont want it.. let them total it, buy it back and sell the car as is..

If you care at all about the salvage title stigma and diminished resale value, do not let them total it. My car was totaled for less damage.

Not exactly.... it may depend on what the laws are in your state but often, the salvage value is deducted from the settlement.

Example: Settlement value is $4k, salvage value is $500. If you want to keep the car you get $3500, if not you get the whole $4k. When people use the phrase "buy back from the insurance company"... really all it means is the salvage value is subtracted from the settlement - because if you settle for the full amount of the total loss, the insurance company disposes of the car for you, which usually means it gets sold at a salvage auction. That said, if you decide to keep the car, you will likely have to show proof of a salvage title (depending on state laws) before the insurance company will pay the settlement.

I'll second that. Might as well go out of pocket and avoid insurance all together imo. I looked into getting insured for appraised value (before a wreck obviously) at one point but it's expensive. Just too many $900 e30's out there for adjusters to cite as comparable.

I don't really understand how it works either. My dad's 92 Jetta was rear ended 12 years ago, and totaled, but somehow has a clear title. My E30 was totaled in 05 in NC when the PO had it.

So the insurance company crapped out on me and nothing is covered. But that's because I didn't have collision coverage to begin with and the other party's insurance declined my claim. I guess l I'll try to fix what I can on my own. I'd rather buy another car for 2000 than spend it on this one. I guess it's time to hit the classified ads. Looking for another e30 preferably a 4 door this time.
