Between the two, i would pick the STI. A better built and reliable car, and as mentioned above...a better depreciation.

I personally think new Minis are rather ugly and I think the STI wagons are beautiful so there is my choice. My friend has an '02 WRX with a Cobb access port; with a economy tune, I think he gets around 28 on the highway so maybe you could look into something like that, if Cobb is available for that year, to offset the MPG difference.

My 2 cents- Subaru is killer on gas mileage as others have said. I also find that the new Subarus go through brakes ridiculously fast, which is not covered under warranty. Mine was a lightly driven DD (impreza sport) and I needed to replace all rotors and pads at 12,000 miles.

Wow guys, thanks for all the input and advice!!!!

I still haven't decided yet though. Financially it makes more sense to buy a new Countryman S. They're offering 0.9% financing, I get to build my own to my liking and a 3 year/36,000 mile warranty. Plus it's less expensive than the STI.

The STI has 16,848 miles so only 19,152 miles left on the warranty. The dealership is pretty firm on the $33k pricetag.

I don't know wtf I'm gonna do yet. Really really appreciate all the comments.

Probably a dumb question. Have you driven both? Which felt better to you?

Not a dumb question at all. I've just driven the Countryman S on Saturday. Coming out of a 2004 M3 daily driver it was very slow but I was surprised how well it handled. I definitely want to drive it again. I still have to test drive the STI, only problem is that it's (3) hours away from me so I have to find time to make that trip.

One of my big fears is that the Countryman won't handle the snow as well as I expect. The STI is a true AWD system where the Countryman is basically FWD but applies power to the rear wheels if it senses a wheel is slipping.

Almost purchased a 2012 wrx wagon not to long ago. If it wasn't for my awful insurance I would have gotten one. Very fun car. Few of my friends have them as well. They are reliable, and the best part about a Subaru Wrx/Sti is that they depreciate SO SLOWLY. I would give up the mpg and take the sti.. And it's a Subaru so it probably won't be as big of a pain in the ass. Also they have a great warranty, the salesmen walked me through it and they are pretty lenient. Good luck!

I've always heard good things about the wrx, and is actually on my list of cars to own. I've heard very mix reviews about the Mini.

You may want to factor in costs to insure these two cars. The STI may be significantly more expensive.
