7-8ft lbs should be put on with an inch lbs wrench. 96in lbs is high enough that it works great even on a harbor freight 1/4" drive torque wrench.

Bad idea! Oil pan will more than likley leak fluid. Then there will be none in the case and you will have lots more of a problem then a few sheared bolts to contend with. Can you say engine rebuild?

Anyone else care to comment on the serverity of damage that this can do. Dont forget that under engine warm up and oil pressure build up there will more than likely be leaks.

You do know there are like 26 bolts holding the oil pan on? I seriously doubt missing two is going to leak that much, if at all. THe gasket is probably so stuck on that all the bolt could be off and it would leak (oilpan might fall off though lol). And by the looks of the bottom of his car, there's a bigger leak then this would cause somewhere else. It's not going to dump 4 quarts of oil in a matter of a few miles.

Little bit of an update

I got the car all buttoned back together, its running great :) Nice to have timing belt and all that done.

There's no oil leaking from that section still, so i think i'm in the clear.

There is of course other leaks to tend to but ah well. What can you expect with a 20 year old car.

I don't understand this. 3 days to do a timing belt, and you break shit? Seriously, buy the appropriate tools, and keep them, that way you know how they respond. If it says anything less than 20 lb ft it means "snug."

well it was more like 6 hours of work spread over 3 days.
