You have a $350 1984 318i. What Engine swap do you do? M50/52-M20-M30

I'm having a hard time deciding what motor I want to throw in my car. Looking to build a budget track/auto x car for next summer to mess around with. Maybe you guys can help me decide :D

For $350, I start by making a list of OEM stuff I need to replace to make it a decent driver, like wheel bearings, etc. Then I would research AutoX classes and rulesets, then put together the best suspension the rules allow. Brake refresh would be high on the list.

Engine swap would happen much later, and would depend on what class I wanted to compete in. It's not worth building a car that doesn't follow a ruleset.
Drive it hard. Maintain it well.

NVM50, M30, or M44. I think a budget M50 stroker would be fun, or I think it would be cool to bore out a M44 for some oversized, lightweight aftermarket pistons (I guess that wouldn't be cheap, though).

You people with decently populated states make engine searches sound easy. If you just want the fun factor, keep the old engine, if you are looking to be more competitive, the m50 sounds to be the best option. The m10 feels like it's running out of steam on some faster courses.

                        Refresh entire suspension.

No doubt a $350 e30 has been neglected.

Then, engine swap pls M30 or M60.
