    S54 Rebuild cost?

Hey guys I've been trying to price out average price of a diy rebuild for an S54 but can't find any info. How much do you guys think it'll cost to rebuild one? Here's the description of it,

S54 with 135.7k out of an 05' M3. Cam shafts are damaged from scoring the number 4 piston. Apparently the piston tapped the valve and put scoring on the lobes. Can't really tell the full extent of the damage, would have to tear it apart for that but deciding just to sell it as is. Engine barely ever driven hard, oil changes every 7,500 miles. Just unlucky I guess. Engine isn't locked up, still runs and drives. Engine was cut off immediately after I heard the sound. Engine only, no accessories. Great building block for someone wanting to build an s54.

Vanos is in great shape, bolts nice and tight - no signs of any bolt rattle. Only code engine was throwing was p0013 camshaft position sensor.

Are you trying to sell this or ask how much it would cost you to rebuild it?
If it's a sale ad its in the wrong place, and you would need to take it apart a bit to find everything that is damaged.
I cannot imagine rebuilding it would be cheap by any means.

I have a set of cams in good shape if you need them, under $100.

if you were buying it, hopefully it's really cheap. I'd do a compression/leakdown test to be sure there's not a hole in a piston or a bent valve. I'd give the head a good inspection looking for broken rockers.

Please clarify whether or not this is a for sale thread, so it can be moved to the appropriate place (after you add a price of course).

Reads to me like he is asking rebuild cost advice.

No someone is selling it and I was wondering what you guys think worst case scenario it'd cost to DIY rebuild it.

            Thanks

it won't be cheap, but S54s aren't getting newer, many are going to require work anyway.

I wouldn't pay more than $1k for it. $2500 gets you a solid running engine, and it'll probably cost 3-4k to rebuild it entirely (more if you mod stuff).

At least 3k for a rebuild, and substantially more if you modify cams, upgrade vanos, treated rod bearings, etc.

I have the S54 and have already spent over 3k on just maintenance and basic bolt on mods.

You would be better off finding a good running one for under 3k.

probably not worth rebuilding even if it is free. it would likely be cheaper to buy a good used engine and save yourself the hassle. i would say its worth whatever its worth as a parts engine.

If you dont rebuild the vanos, you are wasting your time doing anything else.
