an M90 is a slightly special M30 short stroke 3.5 liter. they're pretty beefy motors, and whatever's in there now is definitely not a 2 liter.

That's unequivocally an M30, the valve cover, among other things, gives it away. Besides, the M20's in e12's were carbureted. Almost all e12's are worth saving, especially ones like that. If it was produced for Europe (the EU didn't exist in the late '70's), it's likely a 528i.

^since the m90 wasn't offered in a production car, it is pretty unlikely.

Sure they were, but not many...think E12 M535i. M88 with an M30 head.

as a former owner of a production car with an m90 in it, wat

                    all e12 m535i's came with M90s, as did '78-'81 635csi's.

The vin of the car said its an 520i (m20). So the engine was swapped with the M30 (i'd rather not get my hopes as high as the M90) in and turbo'd. Hope I can get hold of the guy today.

                        What about a 84 euro spec m30 out of a 635csi

I still have exhaust manifolds, a distributor cap and an intake boot for that manifold sitting around somewhere that I'd part with. If it hasn't been standing too long we could probably make it run again.

                          check the trans.

that's going to be a M30B34. You'll have to check the ECU to figure out if it was a green (low comp) or dirty (10:1, nice) B34.

really? i have passed one or two 635csi's and 735i's up in lkq's over the years. had i wiki'ed it before writing that, i would have found:

                              1978-1982 E24 635CSi, E12 M535i, E23 735i

i would say 735i's are the common one here.

so.....assuming the i do get my hands on an m90, it says 215hp and 224 ft/lb of torque. what do you do to increase those numbers? i assume if the stroke is short, an m30b35 crank would help. how about an m30b35 head? how about a euro b34 head? what about an s38b36 itb setup?
