live in the now, the s14 is outdated and too costly to maintain/mod. Given it was an amazing motor back in the day, the s50 is much more practical. Put 100lbs the trunk to balance it out and call it a day

          wrong philosophy.

the s50 not only adds more weight, its positioned further forward than the s14 because of the 2 extra cylinders.

IT'S NOT JUST THE WEIGHT THAT FUCKS THE BALANCE UP ITS THE POSITION TOO.

people who talk smack on the s14 simply dont know. if you have a problem w/ the s14 DON'T BUY AN E30 M3!!!!!!! the s14 is the one and only engine that should touch that car. thats why bmw put it in the fucking car.

s50 is the cheap way out. if you ever have to take the cheap way out, you can't afford this legend of car, nor do you deserve to drive it.

man i woke up on the wrong side of the bed. but i still stand by my post.

A twin turbo Supra will always be faster anyway.

You don't have the money for any of these imaginary conversions.

                          Fuck the purists.

I'd say if you're building the car as a dedicated track rat, stick with the S14. There is no question that the S50 kills the "perfect" balance of the e30 m3 but, as a daily driver, occasional auto-x/HPDE car, the S50 is the only choice. Much cheaper to maintain, much better powerband, and a huge aftermarket.

Also, as I'm sure most of you know, a 24v conversion is not intrusive AT ALL. You can easily bring the car back to original if you decide to later on down the road. There is nothing that needs to be permanently modified on the car.

Oddly enough, during an argument about what should be done with an e30 m3 shell, a VW guy threatened to put a VR6 engine in just to spite me.

background: i have a s50 modded to 260hp in my non-m e30 and i've been driven in an instructor's e30m3 on a real race track with a real race pace.
IMO i did not notice anything special in s14 power delivery (other than peakiness) but that thing could handle.

Now, i say do the following: sell s14 and s50 and put the cash received towards either:
                                1. Euro S50 (more high-revving power) or..
                                2. do as my friend did on his dedicated racing car: light aluminum 2.8L block, lightened crank, pistons; and worked head (p&p, bigger valves, springs, retainers, lifters...), bigger injectors, BBTB, HFM ... to get at least 300rwhp all engine and 8500rpm redline - i really believe that selling the two engines will give you budget for this. (or maybe you can run the S50 until you get all that done, then just swap the engine)

reasoning being: US spec S50 is a compromised engine and S14 is just a moneypit (especially if you plan to drive it every day)

oh yes and...... fuk the purists ;)
