Every state is going to be different, but apparently some will let you get away with strange stuff. Ohio, for instance, has some sort of loophole that allows you to run replica license plates if it is in the proper colors and reflective coating. Taj Ma Garage in Dayton had them on their 959, I saw them on a RHD LVI London taxi used by a chain pub/restaurant (parked in their lot, obviously being used/driven), and my Dad met a guy at a cruise with a VW who had the ones in the photo attached below. Apparently the VW guy got harassed enough for them he kept a printed copy of that particular law to show when pulled over.

Who knows what other states have similar. I have seen a fair amount of EU plates on road vehicles in CA, AZ, NY and OH, surely the legality of such again probably varies by state to state. Euro front plates are totally legal in most states that do not require a state-issues front plate.

Too bad state's don't just let us pay more for something like this:

I know that for here in WA, you're required to use the state provided plates and also have to a front plate. I have a pair of contemporary German plates and also an older German plate last registered in '76 that I collected, and I wanted to use the vintage one on the front because I hate the WA plate on the front but dont want to get hassled for it. I'll probably just use it for any shows or big meets.

I know a local I know had a euro plate made matching his state license plate number for the front of his Z3 M. He said he's never even been hassled about it

A euro front plate, even in the correct number, is basically going to be no front plate in a cop's eyes in a state where one is required, but in a lot of areas they just don't enforce that stuff. Ohio requires a front plate, but you can pretty much get away without one, especially in SW Ohio where KY and IN are both very close and don't issue a front. Cops won't bother with it unless they really want to get you. I went a decade in Ohio daily driving with no front plate and only got one ticket for it while parked, but I wouldn't even think of trying to get away with no front here in CA.
