    Garage Floor Coating/Painting...

Im wanting to coat/paint my 2 car garage. There are plenty of options out there but my biggest factor is that I only have 24hrs to complete the project from start to finish (light foot traffic). Even after it has cured, an occasional jackstand and some rolling carts will only travel on it.

Ive been looking that Valspar garage floor coating kit. Ive been told it can be done within a few hours even though the label says 48-72hrs. Even after it has cured, an occasional jackstand and some rolling carts will only travel on it.

Im assuming that I can speed up the drying process after the acid wash with a gas leaf blower so I can coat sooner than later. It will be ~80*F when the project will in motion so temp should be ideal.

What are your experiences with garage floor coating?

    Cheers!

I am looking at floor finishes too.

GarageJournal.com has a ton of info.

I would say no quality job of epoxy or even paint will happen in twenty four hours.

Could use RaceDeck type flooring. There are several brands from the parent company that do not carry the high price tag.

You could use porcelain tile and lay that easily in a days time.

      Garage Floor Coating/Painting...

It's pretty good stuff. our house was built in 1996 and my mom and dad coated the garage floor with a more or less glossy looking grey paint in 1997. It's held up really well for being 18 years old, theres some stainage from me and some paint drips, and from the two cars leaking oil and other fluids, but the coating definately makes everything easier to clean up. the garage door doesnt seal to the floor tight enough on one side of the garage, so water and snow melt leak in and make a 2 foot diameter puddle in one area... the paint has been eroded, worn thin and in one spot completely stripped by this. I have not noticed any marks from my jack or jackstands, I think that would depend on how many coats you do and how thick the surface is.

so yeah, you do it right and it'll last for a long time. I know I want to redo it soon. I want to paint a checkerboard hahahah.

Truck bed spray liner. If you don't mind black then it is tough as nail.

Look into simply polishing and the densifying and sealing your floor. Makes for a strong, reflective surface good for light distribution.

Something I consider as I am still not sure what advantage RaceDeck offers.

I've used the rustoleum epoxy kits for my basement floor, it's a nice finish especially if you prep the surface well (if it's never been painted this is pretty easy). It won't be ready to have a car/jack stands on within 24 hours though. It's also slippery as hell when wet so I'd recommend some of the anti skid they sell to go with it.

What did you guys do for prep? Power wash with solvents? I'm looking to do this in the next couple weeks....floor is loaded with oil stains, want the epoxy to adhere correctly.

Some of the kits come with a cleaner that is scrubbed. And for extra oil stains, Ive seen some more powerful cleaners on the shelves just for this purpose.

Concrete etching chemical. They had me mix mine 1/8. After two times i still wasn't happy with the results. I mixed it 1/3 ratio and it fuckin boiled teh floor. Came out really nice.

If you have a lot of build up of nasty you can always use a belt sander in the tough spots, or if you have a floor sander of course.

Here are the steps i did

                    Power wash
                    sand
                    etch x4
                    prime
                    paint
                    wait the 72 hours

No floor will hold up to metal fab though. If i were to do it all over again, sand, etch, polish, seal.

                      for the rostoleum epoxy floor.

Sweep, scrub with degreaser, rinse, scrub with degreaser, hit areas with extra oil and clean. you will then use the chemical etching agent. allow to dry ~3days to 2 weeks. Mix paint as instructed otherwise you will get a color mismatch.

ive done a few garages. and just like any painting all the work is in the prep. Rush the prep your floors gonna peel like shit

I dont think 24 hours is enough time as others have said. It will dry in 24 hours no problem, but it will not fully cure causing it to possibly get dirty or chip/mark up much easier in the future. I did mine with Rustoleum coating and waiting 24 hours to walk on it and 72 hours to put anything heavy on it.
