    Calling all IX owners

I am going to school in Eastern Washington in the fall and thinking about picking up an IX. I want to be able to come home on weekends so I need something with better traction than my IS so I can make it over the pass. What do I need to know about these cars? What kind of maintenance needs to be done when I buy the car and later on? How much more do they go for than a regular e30? Any info would be helpful thanks.

low ground clearance = useless in 2' deep snow. get a truck.

no, an ix would be fine in 2" deep snow. What are you talking about? Besides, he would rarely see deep snow going over soqualmie pass. It is a large interstate highway.

Sorry, I've never had an ix, and i cant help you out.

' means feet, " means inches.

last i heard, snowqualmie gets 2'+ in snowstorms, and it can get up to 1' before they close it.

Mine is great in snow, best winter beater I've had.

The things to keep an eye on are the front c/v boots, they tend to crack and tear. And fluid levels in the t-case and front diff.

The front suspension is completely unique to the car. Make sure that is properly sorted or it will be a long and expensive process. Ask me how I know....

Also, make sure the AWD system is working properly. Try to get all four off the ground and make sure all the wheels spin when the car is in gear. From the Yahoo iX mailing list....the way to test if the VC is working CORRECTLY is jack the rear wheels off the ground and slowly engage first gear. The front wheels should try to pull the car forward. If not, the VC could be upwards of $1K to replace.

Beyond that, my iX has been rock solid. It's had it's share of issues, but nothing out of the ordinary for a 18 year old car.

              Good luck

                325ix

I've owned one since last March, GREAT in snow, I was passing suvs on the side of the highway this past winter in 7". Things to look out for--control arms are usually shot, same for tie rods and struts. Check out the 325ix club on yahoo, it has a lot of good information, and links to several ix sites, including the Gordon Haines ix site(which is invaluable). I got lucky(I think), and paid 3k last year for mine with 115,000, but I've probably put about $1200 into it so far and my a/c is shot, so there's another $1000. Good luck!!!!

had mine for just over 2 years..paid 4g's..tax incl. with hmm..260 oookm- now has 300 000+ km on it...

I've spent an additional 5g's on it since then*sigh...(feeling a little walletburn) BUT...I bought the car with ZERO car knowledge..and in hindsight, I could have saved huge coin doing the work myself and ordering parts online(or just at the local wrecker etc)...not to mention knowing it was overpriced...

so..I'm a little bitter...although...this car LOVES the snow XD
I would highly recommend the ix if you can find one thats been sorted out...especially if you don't mind doing your own work on it...

                  winter beater x a bazillion
