Just Read!! Took from other board, could be true?

Did anyone see the 1989 E34 525i in this month's issue of European Car? It was completely restored, and ran a Korman 2.7 stroker with cams, headwork, headers etc. They said it pulled 226 RWHP on the dyno, and it says it in 2 different places.

    Whats the deal here?

Also, has anyone ever read the article by Pete McHenry where he states that 220+ bhp is possible from an M20 by using early big six AFM and injectors, modded 2.7 block, custom pistons, headwork, shorty headers, proper exhaust, and cam? He is a pretty reputable guy and the article ran in Roundel years ago and also in the BMW Enthusiast's Companion book (reprint).

    What's up with this?

What I am getting is I miss the rawness of my Corrado VR6 and want to build an asskicking M20 powered E30. No M50 swaps or turbos, just a good street car
My question is, the E34 in that year got the M50 engine or still the M20? Could someone confirm both questions or comments? :?

yep the 89 E34 got the M20, then in 90 it got the m30 then went to the M50 after that.
Yes And I've heard that 220 is very possible with the m20.

high compression, an agressive cam, and a fully built race motor like korman could build can do 220 in the M20.

Mind you, it costs more than it is worth.

They claim 226rwhp from a 2.7L w/ 9.75:1 compression and a 272 cam. Complete and utter bullshit. Korman's a bunch of liars

Korman ROCKS! I got to meet him and hear him speak at 5erfest 2003.
We were all surprised to see him drive up in an E34 525.. haha, until he told us about what was under the hood. He really knows how to make an engine put out some HP.

It's not possible to get that sort of power with a 272 and mild mods, but an aggressively and PROPERLY setup M20 can get great numbers.

                      isn't the M30 a 3.5 liter engine? the M20/M50 are both 2.5. the M30 definetly didn't replace the M20 though..

                      we didn't have the E34 here in 1988. :)

the M30 got different sizes, from what I know and saw personally, are 3.0L 3.2L and 3.5L

Not sure if the 2.8L are the M30 family, since them use the same intake manifold.

My dad had a 535i 1988 german, very nice car, sold it.

                          The early E34 525 is a M20, in 92 it's a M50 non-vanos, 93-95 M50 vanos.
                          The M30 engine in a E34 is only a 3.5l from 89-93, then they went to the V-8 3l 530.

Korman is FULL OF IT, just like Dinan. You can't do a basic stock rebuild and add almost 75whp. Maybe it was crank HP and they god confused. Even that is a bit optimistic.

I feel no matter what the displacement, it's really hard to get the M20 over 220 whp. You got to change just about everything out. Of course FI doesn't count.

                            88 isn't an E34, 88 would be an E28, which had the 3.4 M30 not 3.5, the 3.5 M30 didn't come untill the E34 and the E32.and 2.8 is an M30 threre found in the E12's then there is the 3.3 m30 int he 733, 633, and 533.

hahhaa, both are mistaken, I have the proof, my dad owned a 535i 1988 german spec, builded for my country, spanish OBC also, in 1988 were available e34 with the 3.5L M30, trust me...if not ask a true german man who knows or had any of those e34s 1988 with the m30 3.5L and he will agree with tme...

I had that car in my hand man! Probbaly US didn't get that combo car int hat year, we did. ;)

1988 was the year and model production of my dad's bimmer
