old momo shift konb stuck...

I have a very beat momoshift knob I want to replace with just some plastic bmw knob but the damn thing is stuck on there

DOES NOT APPEAR TO
1) bop it
2) pull it
3) twist it

NOTHING WORKS! help please, I've heard there is allen screws at the black ring thing but the knob itself does not budge at all. I've lifted off the boot and when i pull or twist it seems to want to tear a hole in the boot under the housing

Twist that black piece counter clockwise. When you unthread that piece, you should see three allen set screws. Loosen those and the knob should slide off.

edit: no luck, any other ideas?

I've essentially stripped the black ring 1/4 the way thru almost looks like just an aluminium ring now =\

also the shifter wants to turn with it even if I try to hold it down, I'm having a weird paranoid feeling it might blow out a syncro or the linkage if i keep going at it. whole thing might turn 180 while the damn knob still stuck there laughing at my ass

honestly I had the same knob in my e30 when I bought it (its on ebay now)

the black part that says momo will unscrew and there are 3 allen set screws

is it possible my ring is seized?

damn, gotta spray some lube... ugh gonna have a drippy mess to deal with getting onto the boot,wood, under console.

edit: got none in the household... now I have a really janky looking knob with scratched up momo ring. Hopefully I didn't torque out any bushings or small components under the shifter


Does the entire shiftknob + ring turn together? If so, I'm thinking about using 3 tools to clamp and turn them all simultaneously but on the other part of my thinking it might cause everything under the shifter to explode

Hold the shift knob, turn the ring. Looking from the top, you turn the ring clockwise. The ring will unscrew downward from the knob.

If you hold the knob and turn the ring, the shift lever should not turn.

The sleeve unscrews separate from the knob.

When you say pipe wrench is this what you mean? Channel Locks always help me out in situations like these.



One with long handles to help with leverage will make it a ton easier then also the longer the handles the easier it is to get a really good grip on it. Don't be a waffleswaffleswaffleswaffleswaffles dude, be stronger than that shift knob.

got it finally on latest attempt went with ease, must have been loosened over all that raging I did earlier lol hopefully the rest of the shifter assembly is doing ok

- Yes, was clockwise not counter clock (for this one in particular atleast)
