Finally, got a current OEM badge in...

Here's the sticker badge and the OEM black back side by side.

$5 china "sticker label" badge vs $20 OE BMW "black back" badge.

The difference in evident when side by side. The OEM black back is thinner, more convex and the lettering and border features are raised for a 3d effect. The outside border is more like brushed aluminum than chrome. It appears to be very high quality. I'm curious how these failed.

The eBay ones I have seen are a flat printed emblem covered in an epoxy-like coating to give it a deep, domed look. OEM BMW ones are actually a molded (stamped) sheet of aluminum that is painted then mounted to a plastic backer. They are 100% better. Well worth the extra money.

Sounds right to me. You really do see the difference when they are side by side. Otherwise, the knock off looks fine for what it is.

I bought some of the $7 knock-offs from Amazon and twice in a row got damaged ones. The paint of the emblem on the back/inside was scratched, meaning it happened during production. That's when I bought OEM ones and never looked back.

I've had two chrome/plastic badge failures in two years. IT SUCKS.
