    License plate blurr

Why do people obscure or blur out their license plate when they picture their cars on the internet?

Precaution. I almost never do it... but I guess I could see why you would want to.

People are paranoid. They must blur their license plates while they drive around on public roads as well?! :D

^^^Exactly. They think someone will use their plate number to find their house and steal their car.

Personally, I started doing it because our local SCCA chapter recommended it at our events. They had instances of insurance companies finding out about people running timed events and dropping them.

Some of our car are relatively distinct. If there's a picture of my car with the plates visible on facebook or a forum somewhere, and another picture of it on the club's website running at an event, it's not hard to make the connection.

With technology being what it is, it takes 30 seconds to blur a plate out. Why even take the risk if it's so easy to avoid?

Also, you never know what will happen in the future. Once something is on the internet, it's there for good. Personally, i'd rather err on the side of caution, even if it doesn't seem like a big deal today. There's already situations of people not getting jobs because the company browsed through their facebook history and saw evidence of questionable conduct, etc. Things like that happen and will get more prevalent in the future. Personally, I limit what information I broadcast for this reason.

                  I'm proud of my plates.

I think blurring them is stupid, unless you're paranoid of your insurance co.
