that's not what I meant by lag - I meant the narrower powerband that results from minimizing lag by using a smaller, more responsive turbo.

There's still throttle lag; a turbo simply can't respond as quickly as say, a well tuned N/A engine with ITBs. it can be somewhat tolerable, but it will never have the same responsiveness. That matters to some more than others.

Doesn't sound like lag to me. If you are trying to accelerate quickly and starting below 2k, you're doing it wrong. There's going to be trade offs no matter what you do. Even with a supercharger you aren't going to get the best of both worlds down low and up top. There is no one size fits all with forced induction, unless you twin-charge.

Anywho, I agree it all comes down to personal preference. I'd just hate to see someone say they prefer a supercharger over a turbo charger without a thorough understanding, or even driving both. I say that, because there seem to be some people in this thread who say they would want a supercharger because of x, y, and z, but haven't had any experience behind the wheel of a proper Turbo vehicle.

you can deny it all you want, but all turbos have lag - even the best OEM ones. take the 335i, which is a "low lag" setup, and it's still there. But it also has another drawback; a powerband similar to an M20B27. You get a big woosh from 2krpm, and then it's over by 5k..

I don't think there is right or wrong way to go about it. Yes you can throw a 15g turbo on an m20 and have the boost at 2k rpm. It will also fall on its face in the upper revs.

I have worked on turbo cars, both OEM and home-brewed, and while they are fun it's just not what everyone is looking for. My question to you is why not go SC? I'm sure before Kam built his turbo kit someone told him just to drop a S5x/M5x motor in or M30.

Its not that there's anything wrong with turbos. Its just not something everyone wants.

Most people just slap a big ass Turbo on their car. If you size your Turbo correctly for your power and delivery goals, you would be surprised how responsive it can be.

Also, don't get a kit. Read, read, read until you understand what you need. Then piece it together.
oem know what they are doing, e30 owners not so much

Anything can be made to work on anything. With enough money and/or time..

Putting on my old man pants and shouting, tone deaf voice:

Back in the day, most aftermarket supercharger kits were based around the lowly GMC 6-71 blower. It was a twin screw, roots style blower that was originally installed on desiel engines. At the time, most engines were V-8s and so in order to adapt a 6-71 to most engines was to slice off the top of an open plenum intake, weld a flange for the bottom of the blower, and add a plate on top for a Holley or Carter carb..

Really, it was that simple. But then you had to tune the carb and also cut a big ass hole in the hood.

It was a great setup for the street and somewhat useful on the drag strip or land speed runs. But not ideal.

Eventually, blowers got smaller and more efficient and more specialized for different needs..

    Any whoot.. time marches on.

Would a charger from a Mercedes kompressor work? Do e30 guys ever use these?

Been watching this thread.. any kind of kit for a super charger would be expensivo.. what we (budget minded people) really need is a whole community centered on parts for a s/c conversion. To open up a used market, diy, etc. If you look into turbo kits they're stupid expensive, but if you're able to buy used and program MS yourself etc it gets more affordable. Still, m30 swap seems the best bet for me, being that it's the cheapest of the bunch and I really want more low end torque than anything, but in an ideal world, I would want a roots s/c over a turbo for the every day driving that my car sees

I too think a SC would be better for stop light racing then a turbo - and that's 95% of a daily driver anyways - at least for me. Turbos are great - but you really need some empty road to wind them out - again, just my feelings.

But.........I really want to SC my m30b35. I think that would be a killer setup.

Who and what is this whodwho? And what do you guys think would be a good start for a super charger build on an m20? Should I try and make an m50 super charger work?

Yea he's not doing something right. Tell him to call whodwho. There's a quite a few guys running turbo setups making 350+HP no problem.

Sounds like he isn't the best tuner.

It's not boost that breaks things usually, but detonation from a poor tune or hardware issues that go unchecked. Sure, when you start really pushing things, stuff will break from the power. Most of the time however, its poor Tuning and a lack of fucks given.

Do you not think boosting an m20 is going to over stress the engine? I know a guy who lives near me who is on his second engine and 5 head gasket in less than a year. With a turbo set up.

I should have been clearer. Your post was obviously giving f34r shit. I was referring to his useless post. I was also under the impression he is (was?) a moderator. Maybe we all could relax a bit.
