      I like those too ;)

But once I start, all maintenance activity stops!

This. Not everyone cares for cars like you do. Fix it, do it right and be happy with the results.

If you can't fix it with a hammer, Rost Off, cable ties and duct tape, then it isn't worth fixing.

            I definitely reuse old hardware.

I reused my alternator belt when I did my waterpump/timing belt. Properly tensioned, though.

Mine were frozen, removed it as described, didn't bend anything but I stripped two of the exhaust stud holes on the head. Hasn't been fixed almost a year later.

Yepp. Missing one donut for that exact reason.

            Did that.

I hoard old hardware for future use. But i toss anything damaged or rusty beyond superficiality, and they are cleaned and sorted by size. :-)

I too hoard old hardware. Most factory fasteners are pretty damn good quality and will stand the test of time. Exhaust bolts though, well, if it's trash it's trash. No use fighting rusty threads installing something.

I can SO relate to OP. I (like a lot of enthusiasts) am super-anal. I'll never MAKE money on my old cars because I pretty much have the attitude "hey...it's a 25-year-old car...what's the point in saving $50 in miscellaneous hardware, etc.). In fact, every part that isn't replaced is stripped, sanded, and painted with epoxy-based chassis paint! But I KNOW that it was done right (even if I F it up the first time!). Having said that I pretty much ASSUME that NOTHING was done correctly by previous owners!:)

wait, do you have another account here, 'ahlem'? I sold a m42 trans to a guy with a silver late model with that user name. All us michigan guys need to organize a meet this summer.

I showed my daughters the "respect your elders " video on YouTube. My oldest asked if there were any local events like this, but I wasn't aware of any in Michigan. Now she wants us to take all 4 of our bimmers to Washington next year!
