    Oil change horror story

This is what happens when someone buys a car they can't afford to maintain.

Regardless of who's at fault, this is exactly why I insist on doing routine maintenance on my own vehicles

I replaced an engine on a 2010 Maxima with 6,000 miles on it. The owner was from Canada, and got his oil changed in MD at 6k. Well, Jiffy Lube double gasketed it.

Poor guy had to pay for the engine out of pocket, and also voided his powertrain warranty. Nissan of Canada wouldn't honor the factory warranty anymore because Nissan North America replaced the engine.

Fucked right? I don't know how it ended, Service advisor told me he was paying out of pocket and was suing Jiffy lube. Still, you can't buy back a warranty on a new car.

      Just read that link.

Honestly that guy is smart. He saved himself a much larger headache, and will probably end up turning a profit.

What the fuck. That a business which chooses to allow employees to operate in such a manner is in business at all is a national disgrace.

I don't think the issue was he couldn't afford it. More he was very busy and made the error of not thinking twice before using them.
He was pretty smart the way he went about it and in the end they paid up and he got a $800 dollar dsg service for free.

Kudos to him for checking everything before he left and saving him a $10000 bill.

"Note, I usually do the oil changes myself but its been a little hectic lately. We are selling the house, things are packed up, yada, yada. So I figured, why not do an added 5K interval change at such a cheap price and i'm driving around anyways near there."

Good job Audi driver! I can't blame him, lots of people use valvoline. I think the lesson here is to make sure the job was done correctly, some of these places suck.

Yeah, I saw that. I don't believe it.

The mere fact that he owned the necessary tools should indicate that he knows the importance of having it done RIGHT, and that most of those quick lube places DO NOT have the trained staff and tools....so what was he expecting? a miracle for $49?

Dude, oil changes aren't exactly rocket science. I've paid other places to do mine just because I don't feel like it. I supervise, like this guy did, but I haven't had an issue.

Shit, you can walk into walmart and buy your oil, then tell them after you've paid that you want them to do the service. Ends up being $20 for the service, including filter, which is a fucking steal.

I completely understand where that guy is coming from. Lube places probably account for 90% of oil changes done a day. These issues are not the norm.

hard to believe people still use places like jiffy lube. Its really hard to find one that does honest job. Below video is almost 10 year old, seems like jiffy lube still likes ripping people. Fuck them all, DIY is life.

The fact that they're even still in business means not enough people have seen the videos.

The Audi guy's story is truly unbelievable. If some monkey used a saw on my car the police would've been involved, just not the same way as in his story.

Or it means that while these things may seem to be an every day occurance, it's actually quite rare.

Don't get me wrong here, I prefer to do my own oil changes. But if you guys think untrained high schoolers can't do a proper oil change, then how the fuck are 75% if the cars on this board running? The truth is, these guys probably have more automotive training than half the DIY'rs here.

Every industry has their clowns that just don't give a shit about what they do. Ever pay someone to grow your food, build your house, raise the beef you eat.

For fucks sake, it's an oil change. Just do like the guy in the OP did and you will be fine. Changing oil isn't some feat, its the most basic maintenance item. I'll worry about the big shit. My S4 will probably get an oil change done by Walmart, or the next guy to inspect it. If they fuck it up, they're paying for it.
