its the piece of body panel that runs around bottom of my car, lower, rear, exhaust comes through it. i cant put a name on it, but its got rust and i want to replace it. its not really a valence, because I only have an i. its below the bumper. i just need a name so i can ask vines bmw if they have a rustfree one. thx all.

Yes you can, it's called a sheet metal nibbler and the weld the new one in. Hell anything can be replaced. Look over at Zion's website they have a destroyed M coupe that was refabricated in about a month.

Hell in Germany, I see late model cars with early tails on them due to it being cheaper to graft them that way. Boy the look funny too.

that doesn't really count. by replace, I meant you can't just order a new one from the dealer and bolt it on. of course you can cut and weld :P

Believe it or not most sheet metal is still available. I have seen the rear quarter panels new from dealer for sale on ebay complete with stickers on them.

                          In that case...

It is one piece along with the floorpan of the trunk.

I can give you that part number ;)

See why rust is a bad thing people?

I have a "slight" problems with rust on my car in the same area. Actually, it's pretty major, also on the rear quarters where the trunk pockets are. Due to the rust in those areas and on ther rear valance, I came up with a simple solution.

Find a donor car. Remove the rear bumper, and make one cut from rear wheel well to rear wheel well. I found the perfect car at a salvage yard, and for $65 have all new metal to weld in. the best part is that the weld seam will be entirely covered by the bumper, so no need to fret about perfect body work. Remarkably, the car is rust free in almost all other areas. Now I just need to find some time to weld it in.

My recommendation is that you get to a salvage yard with a sawzall. Cut the peice out larger than needed so it can be properly trimmed and welded.
