    Opinoins on e39 M5s

I noticed you can pick up e39 M5's for a decent price still

    Example

Anyone know of any major issues with these? If I bought one for a daily driver am I getting into another Range Rover problem? (see a different thread) or we talking normal maintenance with timing belt being the biggest issue?

other than the hideous red/black interior resembling a dirty tampon in the example above, what is there not to like?

Great car but the earlier ones had a lot of engine and electrical issues for some reason. If you look on the E39 boards anything past 20013 is more coveted. I dont know the issues off the top of my head but I remember reading threads about the differences post 2003 and also the value of the 2003+ is much higher.

Still one of my favorite cars, the S62 is an awesome engine!! I considered swapping one in my E38, but I want to keep my automatic in that car, need at least one laying around.

            That's too much for a pre-facelift car.

Aside from the s62 being a little expensive to maintain they are cool cars. That interior is hideous though.

AFAIK, about as reliable as a mid 80's Corolla

If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna cost ya!

That can be said about a lot of motors.

                      S14/S38....gernades.
                      M20 timing belts....gernade.
                      S54 rod bearings....gernade.
                      S62....???

Any motor can be a ticking time bomb. If you maintain it, however, you really shouldnt have any issues. These motors can easily go 200k+ miles.

I don't think he means the motor alone. More like the whole car is a high maint. headache, esp. if a dd.

                          well, no

There is a very long and detailed look into a serious problem that has ben showing up on US Spec s62 motors in the E39 M5 community. The issue seems to be most noticable in '00 & '01 cars with higher miles (~80K) , but some have had it at as early as 17K. In a nutshell the anti-pollution cold start system is prone to clog with carbon laden exhaust gases which then block it, and cause a SES failure. The only solution is an $8,000 head removal and cleaning. This is a link to the thread on

This was what I was talking about with the early 00-01 models.

Thats why you stay away from the motors made in the years affected. E39 M5's are great cars but you have to look for the right year build.
