This makes me sick OP. I hope you and your wife find this scum. Ugh...

And then all the neighbors thought it was you lolWhen I use to live in Downtown Corpus, my old 335i was parked on the street every night. One morning just about everyone's cars were broken into/picked over. Mine escaped without a scratch. The only difference I can think is that I had a dashcam in blatant plain view on my windshield. It wasn't always recording, but there's a lit light on the body of it constantly. I really believe it's what spared my car many nights.

It's sitting in my garage in a pool of oil. I'm keeping it around as a spare. Ideally I want to go through it and throw a M54 rotating assembly in it, but I have to save some funds before even considering that.I've been looking at those for awhile as well for insurance reasons. The one I want looks pretty good and will probably pick one up for the wife's x3 and my x5.
How did that engine work out for you (or your dad, can't remember who was going to use it)? I never did get you the info on the top for the convertible guy in Austin. Sorry about that... It is an "E-Z ON Auto Tops" brand top but unfortunately could never find out who installed it. I thought the PO had a receipt for it, but just had a warranty info card for it.
As for the top, no worries. It's currently being replaced. At least I've paid them to and the car is there. However they're dodging calls, so that's fun.Leave a comment:

Dogs are mostly useless as a security measure. My family has had dogs for my entire life, we still managed to have bikes, a handtruck, a jack and some other things stolen over the years, and we didn't even live in a bad neighborhood. Just about everyone I know who has had their car or house broken into has a dog. The problem is that they go off barking at every little thing so people just ignore it, they're asleep when the crime is happening, or the crim tosses some food over the fence to distract them. Chances that a dog in your house would prevent a smash and grab in your car are pretty damn slim. Maybe if the car is in the yard with the dog.Leave a comment:

Thanks guys. My wife got super pissed after she realized they went into her car too. They stole her new fitted BMW car cover I got her for the X3. So she's out for blood now... lol. She was mad at herself as well because she left the vehicle open (something I had warned her about in the past)... so she'll be more vigilant about that in the future I'm sure.
Camera system is on its way... I'm looking into some other stuff as well in case it happens again. I'd like to just send the cops to the guy's address. ;)
One good thing is that it has really spurred the wife to want to go forward with my plan to open up the other side of the garage and tear down the laundry room. We have a large garage and could easily get the 3 e30's in there so we started working on that this weekend. :)Leave a comment:

At my old job anytime we left a car out in the parking lot a dude would hop our hop wire fence and break into any of the cars he could to take anything he could. Broke into an E34 we had and stole the radio from like 1994. Though nothing of this amount of damage ever happened. We had a full K04 turbo set up on the floor of a GTI and he ignored it, went though the glovebox and didnt steal anything.
I say A few drives around at 3 in the morning might be a good idea. Thats what I would do if someone completely destroyed the interior of my car like that. I fucking hate these scumbags.
At my new job we just had someone steal the plow pumps off of two of our plow trucks. We have them on camera but they wore hoodies so identifying them is next to impossible.Leave a comment:

Good thinking with the cameras. Someone dumb enough to break into cars may be dumb enough to not cover their face. And as someone else said about the automatic lights being a deterrant, a visible camera sure as hell is too! In walmart some people look at the camera and trip balls and don't steal lol.
Hope the guy gets caught, and gl with insurance and everything.Leave a comment:

Thanks for the well wishes. Going to put it in the garage and hit up PnP tomorrow to see what I can find for it...
Thanks... hopefully karma is a thing.
Honestly, I'm just going off what the vet told us, we don't have papers or anything. I believe it's regular African... here is a pic. He's 10 now so is getting up there in years. Still moves around okay though. Wish we could run him more but when we do he has hip problems so we try to keep his play sessions shortish.

That was my thoughts exactly. At least the first time this happened they left the dash intact and didn't damage the HVAC controls.
Thanks for the thoughts. And yes it sounds really rough. That's what a 400,000 mile m20 sounds like with (what I am guessing) is copious amounts of piston slap. It's sounded like that since we bought it back in 2009ish. Was really neglected, there was sheared head bolt just rattling around in the valve train when I first got it home.
I do that on the vert. I keep less than nothing in that car and just leave it unlocked. Last thing I want is a slashed top or something along those lines.
Will be upgrading the deck for sure, thanks for the sentiments. I don't like cheap alarms, but am going to be installing a camera system. Monoprice has some good options that won't break the bank and still have HD recording/playback as well as good night time performance.Leave a comment:
