1991 BMW 318is.
I'm currently working on the "mess under the intake" delete found on the M42 forum. While replacing hoses I came across a post-production item known as the "additional thermostat" that links the intake to the output hoses that lead to the heater core from the engine. I've tentatively chosen to delete the "additional thermostat" as I believe mine is faulty and don't want to replace it for $50 and clutter up my engine bay since the whole point of the hose delete is to get rid of any unnecessary plumbing. Some have mentioned that if the engine overheats, the thermostat's job is to keep excessively hot water from entering the heater core which could cause it to 'explode' and spray scalding hot water all over the driver's legs. Yikes. I must be brave...or dumb...for wanting to delete it.
In any event, if any of you have done this delete, please let me know how it worked for you or if it backfired and you ended up putting it back on later (not something I want to do).
As a side-note...can anyone explain this stain on my passenger side carpet? I want to say I've seen other E30s with a similar stain. What the heck is this from? Perhaps the heater core DID explode in the past? Maybe the stain is related to why this car was retro-fitted with the additional t-stat? I need your wisdom!
