Mess under the intake delete, Addt'l thermostat delete, Mystery carpet stain help!

    1991 BMW 318is.

I'm currently working on the "mess under the intake" delete found on the M42 forum. While replacing hoses I came across a post-production item known as the "additional thermostat" that links the intake to the output hoses that lead to the heater core from the engine. I've tentatively chosen to delete the "additional thermostat" as I believe mine is faulty and don't want to replace it for $50 and clutter up my engine bay since the whole point of the hose delete is to get rid of any unnecessary plumbing. Some have mentioned that if the engine overheats, the thermostat's job is to keep excessively hot water from entering the heater core which could cause it to 'explode' and spray scalding hot water all over the driver's legs. Yikes. I must be brave...or dumb...for wanting to delete it.

In any event, if any of you have done this delete, please let me know how it worked for you or if it backfired and you ended up putting it back on later (not something I want to do).

As a side-note...can anyone explain this stain on my passenger side carpet? I want to say I've seen other E30s with a similar stain. What the heck is this from? Perhaps the heater core DID explode in the past? Maybe the stain is related to why this car was retro-fitted with the additional t-stat? I need your wisdom!

I wouldn't get rid of it since it is a BMW recall item and heater cores exploding are a real threat..

Personally, I've owned 5 E30's since 2004 and none of them have had it. I've also never heard of a heater core exploding. But, it's ultimately up to you.

You guys literally sound like the devil on my left shoulder  and the angel on my right shoulder !

I want to leave it in but I also want it out!

Can't someone just make up my mind for me! I feel like if these things were exploding all over people's legs on the regular...there'd be a lot more on the internet than the one or two threads I've seen related to the topic. I realize I'm taking a risk...

There will be times when I run my car hot as I'm planning to partake in at least 8-10 autocross (aka Solo) events this year...and I enjoy a good romp on the highway periodically or up to Lake Placid through the Adirondacks.

the stain actually looks like it is from a heater core leak lol, that's the only place really that a stain like that can come from. The console is a breeze to take off so Id do that and take a closer look

the thermostat you want to delete is to make the car idiot proof. If you watch your temp gauge than youre not gonna have any problems...

              This.

Don't excessively overheat your car and you won't have a problem.

Make sure the elephant drain hose isnt clogged. When mine was clogged, I had water come out from that exact spot.

You can also smell it to see if its coolant or water.

By elephant drain hose do you mean the one going from heater core to pipe with four ends on it...or the hose the heads back to the bottom of the radiator? Or neither of those?

elephant drain hose is gonna be on the firewall on the passenger side of the valve cover, its flat black and about 1 inch wide by 5 inchs long. they clog up with pine needles, leaves, etc. and the water has to find another place to dump.

Heater core leak or heater valve leak. Had mine take a shit on me a month ago leaked from the same spot.

What was your solution? Replace heater core? Just valve? Both?
