Decisions, decisions. to part or not to part?

so guys, how do you handle the stress of parting out a car (87 es) when your daily (86 es) has over 400k on her and you know as soon as you let something go (probably for less than it's worth) the same part on your daily will give up the ghost and you'll wind up buying a replacement and kicking yourself in the ass.

The price for which you sell your part, you will likely pay for the later part.

The inventory cost of keeping a parts car on net will mean youre ahead if you part then buy what you need later.

Good question,I bought an ES in September to replace my near 350k car with a little rear end damage ,unfortunately the new car was not as described and I have removed quite a few substandard parts and replaced them with ones from my older car ,my older car is still currently my DD,I do not want to part my old car out but it still drives so well even though it has missing bits and is partially disassembled ,it is more valuable to me as a nice running car than what I could get for it ,and I do not want to really sell it to someone who might part it out ,I would almost rather give it away than see it dismantled ...it has an automatic, what to do...?BTW,Robert ,I thank you for the ICV I will be installing it early next week ,thank you for your sacrifice!

You're better off buying new for most things. I would keep stuff you really want in the basement and part out the rest of the car. You're going to get money for stuff by parting it out, some of which you'll never need to replace

don't know what to do about things like the alternator, power steering pump, wiper and window motors things like that. the stuff that could go any day on my 400k plus daily.

How much is a car payment? $150? $200? So put that much a month into savings each month for when something breaks. It'll be cheaper to maintain a used car than it is to buy new, so just keep up with your savings so you can keep up with your maintenance. It's not stressful.

what kind of crappy cars are you pricing out?!?! and is that a lease or finance?
IMO, anything worth driving is at least 300-400 per month.
If it's got tits or tires, it's gonna cost ya!

I have no idea. I mean, I DD an e30 I bought for $500 and turned it into a decent car. I've never really looked at what new cars cost. Setting aside $300-400 a month for an e30 would be insane, but $150-$200 a month should be plenty to take care of any unexpected repairs (if you do the work yourself).
