I think due to the unibody construction e30s do well in rollovers and side-impacts. Which is lucky, because most e30s end their lives by rolling off roads or sliding into trees.

Well from what ive read and whats been posted the frontal crash rating is rather low, but the are other factors that make a car safe. That said these are old light cars that fair rather well in accidents.

The number for the e30 and e36 are not impressive, but the stories I've heard about these cars are very impressive. I know lots of members here and on other e30 forums that have gotten in decent wrecks with their e30 but managed to walk away.

A friend of mine ran his E36 into a freeway divider at 70mph and walked away.

I feel pretty safe in my BMW's.

In the accidents in my e36, it held up well. The e30 I know is safe, I have always been curious to see the actual crash test pics to see what they didnt like about it. That said, though, I have a lot of faith in my e30, new cars are a lot safer, but it is still laid out very well and is very solid.

The reason they don't get good ratings is because they transfer the crash energy into you instead of absobing it via crumple zone. I hit a barrier at ~ 80 MPH and I walked away scott free; the only real damage was the left front corner, which was pushed in 8 inches.

                Just a thought:
We hear and see lots of stories about bad accidents involving e30s. The drivers will post photos of messed up cars and stories about how they basically walked away. I have not seen a single story about someone dying in their e30. Perhaps this is because they did not live to write and share pictures of their horrific crashes.
In other words, it is much easier for us to hear about an accident with survivors than it is to hear about an accident without any survivors.

^I was thinking about this too, because I do read those "r3v'd" posts and everyone is always walking away, but a lot of the people on this forum know eachother outside of it, and I would think that if someone were to die (not that this is e30tech) we would somehow be informed.
