I have been looking at them for a while. $20K will get you a first generation Cayman. They have a small risk of IMS failure.
Personally, gen 2 (09+) interior appears to be MUCH more modern and pleasant on the eye. However you will have to increase your budget by a lot.
Overall they are great cars. -
I have 10 years worth of experience with an 06 S. Only issue was a dead battery from not being driven enough.
Not balls out fast but quick..and fun to drive. I'm 6'3, its a tight fit, but I'd hate myself if it was my DD.
The NAV/PCM system on the first gen is HORRIBLE.'87 325ic, powered by S50.Comment

It wasn't until recently that Porsche upped their interface game.
20k certainly won't buy even a '06 Cayman non-S around here. Are they that much less expensive near you?
The Cayman is like the 318 to the 911 325. If you can live with being slower you get what is probably a more fun car to drive.Comment

I was considering them as a DD, but felt like it wasnt well rounded enough and I ended up in a 08 C350. It has a joke of a navigation, but I got it for a lot less than 20k, has great power, pretty good mpg and is a pretty decent parts hauler for the E30 :rofl:Simon

Those that traditionally feel that way buy E class wagons, not an almost base model C Class.
If you have a second car to move stuff, haul people, and the like a Cayman is fine. You can even do the work yourself if you invest in the tools/a lift, which would pretty much pay for itself with two trips to the dealer.Comment

Not going to argue that, except that even this C class is too big for me. E-class is definitely too big. In an ideal world I wouldve had a BMW 123D, but we dont live in an ideal world and this nearly AMG c-class will doSimon

My dad has one I would consider it a daily driver if you are less then 5'10 and can stand the constant exhaust sound depending on what you have as an exhaust and if you can stand a really stiff ride.
I've driven it about 7 times back and forth from nor-cal to oregon (about 10 hour trip) I say its a little tight and my dad says for him he has a headache after the 5th hour so its really on what you prefer I guessComment

Technically the 987 (Boxster/ Cayman) also have the potential for IMS problems though rumors are that in 07 and 08 they made changes to the setup so reduce the occurrence. They completely eliminated them on the DI motors so 09 and up its non existent.Simon
