The 4 pots get mid 20's. Not bad for a 4x4 pickup.

Try working on or getting work done to a Volvo - from what I've heard they're not that much fun, nor cheap. Heavy and not exactly spectacular on gas either.
Every dime you spend "enhancing the appearance" of your daily (read: modifying) is a dime you could have spent on your e30. I can't imagine owning more than one BMW and not modding one of them. I'm eventually owning my e30 vert, an e34 540i 6-spd, and an e38 740i Sport. But I won't buy the e34 until I finish the e30, and same with the e38. Too hard to mod just one car when there's another calling your name from the garage ;)
Get a car you DON'T care about. I loved my honda - snow, carriages, never worried about it. Sat on the hood, roof, whatever. Strapped shit to the roof, didn't care about the interior, so I could hop in with shit clothes on without worrying about the leather, or load up the engine hoist. Basically, a car that will get you around. Anything more and you'll be tempted to modify.

I'm definitly NOT getting a honda.
I know WAY too much about them, If i get one I would build the motor..... If it has a crappy motor then I would swap in a better motor in a heartbeat and build it up.
I really don't mind having to "mod" two cars. especially if I get a somewhat decent daily than my dad might put some money towards a nice build-up of the e30.
I'm almost done witht he e30 anyways, wheels, something new in the front. keep my seats but redo to interior (dash consoles, etc.) and then build up the motor with a nice turbo set-up.
volvos are nice but I'm not a fan of the older ones that are in my price range. I reall only like the new ones like the S40 and S60.
Was looking at audi, but I would end up doing a little to that and I would rather spend that money on an e34.
I'm not getting a pick-up, thats already ruled out.
looked into nissan but hard to find somethign nice and someone that isn't asking way more than it is worth.

E30 Wagen
If that 535i is in decent shape, just get that. When properly taken care of, these old BMW's seem to hold their value pretty well, which might make it easier if you want to sell it without losing your butt to somebody who just wants cheap transportation. As the years go buy, I expect people will be more willing to pay a premium to own a "classic" BMW. I doubt that will be the case for a Honda or Toyota. But i'm just speculating ten years into the future.
Just my perspective.

91 octane, fuel mileage and fwd are my only complaints(20-24 mpg), but I would not trade any of the performance for mpg. From 50-90 mph this car pulls hard as any.
