    what are these?

hey guys, can somebody please tell me what these are, inside the circles. i noticed in one of my earlier pics, there used to be a hose where that red line is, but now the hose is gone. it must have fallen off. the idle speed has gone down to about 500. when in park, when the engine is revd up, the engine stalls when i let go of the gas pedal. i think it may be due to this missing hose..

it looks like there should be a vaccum hose on the end.

that piece that is circled is a vacuum spring to give the motor more "gas" when the vacuum drops. the hose that connects to it shold come from the middle of the intake right above the valve cover. there is a bolted on piece there with the connections for the vacuum lines to connect to. as far as adjusting the idle it it easy, but you should not have to. if you stand on the intake side of the car, the left side of the throttle body has an adjustment screw, it should have a tamperproof cap on it that you will have to pry off. under the cap is a flat head slot turn it till you get the idle you want. if it is not there, then maybe on the motor that you have, it will be on the other side of the intake where the vacuum hoses go, it has a flat head slot there which is horizontal, but i think that might only be on the E21 models. basically make sure all the lines are connected and not cracked, and you should not have to adjust the idle. hope that helps. mike

            As per the manual

The mixture does not normally require adjustment. That is why it is fitted with a tamperproof cap. A cap remover tool (BMW part number 13 1 011 adjusting wrench 13 1 100 and CO measuring probes 13 0 20 for connection to and exhaust gas analyzer

Remove the plugs from the exhasust manifoldand insert the probes connected to the analyzer

remove the tamperproof cap and then with the engine idling at the normal operating temperature, use the special wrench to set the CO level to between .5 and 1.5%

            Fit a new tamperproof cap

Hope this helps. If you need any more let me know

Don't adjust anything until you put the Vacum hose back on so the engine is not loosing pressue. Same thing will happen when the engine is running and you open the oil fill, the idle will drop due to lack of pressure.
