I didn't do the swap. I bought the car already swapped.

If you are properly coded, an e46 manual does not want to see an a/t computer.
    I dunno about e36, mine are obd1.

I was going to say getting the ECU coded would work it out, but maybe it's the cluster reporting it?? I haven't played with the can bus other then a prototype I'm working on, and now this has me all mixed up as well.

Who's r3v's go to guy for reporgramming modules? ETA / Mark D? I know he knows more then I do on the topic.

Pretty sure that won't clear the codes.

Just pull the auto warning bulb from the cluster.

From all the research I did, at the end of the day it only meant the car was running a couple hundred RPM higher at speed. However, I understand it's a Federal thing - in US spec (OBD2) cars that is an "emissions-related" code, which triggers the dash light and records a stored code. It's also my understanding that same issue does not throw a light or store a code in EU spec cars.

    I blame CARB.
I found this to be an issue among others auto to manual swap cars too. Like you said, its a federal thing and CA just took it way too far.

So I pulled the dme and its from a manual s52. Do you think the auto cluster have anything to do with it? I was reading online and others are mentioning about reprogramming the cluster to clear some codes.

I'm talking to a seller on ebay and this is what he said, "Possibly need to recode the EWS module and/or remove the auto computer if it's still in there. Usually ews delete + ews module removal does the trick too."
"Ews module is coded for the trans type. It talks to the ecu and tells it what maps to look at (auto or manual). The manual dmes are usually forced into manual mode so I'm not sure what's missing here. It's more than just an anti theft immobilizer."

From my research last night, others mentioned that the car will not start if the automatic computer is removed/unplugged. What else does the automatic computer control? Some say it has something to do with the asc and cruise control as well.

Apparently, I just double checked and the dme inside my car is from a manual. So, that throws the idea out the door.

We need that here. Its not like we have a lot of people driving 15 years old car around anymore.

A bad gas cap I can understand. But a tranny selector switch? As if the motor is going to put out different emissions where it's in neutral or drive? Ouch.

I bet the selector switch is looking for contact or resistance provided by the gear elector assembly. If you still have it, you could probe the values(assuming it's not just a connection) and fake it. But the ecu might still trow a fit if it thinks it's being started in gear.

I miss so cal. But not this.
