yeah... i still can't get it working... i think it has something to do w/ my router & the fact that i have all my IP addresses & stuff selected automatically or something... i have no idea... the two computer's are talkin to the net, just not to eachother... it's like me & my EX Girlfriend right before we broke up ;)

i know it CAN do it, and am sure it is currently doing it.... but i dunno for sure. how do i find out?

it's a standard COMPUSA special... Cable/DLS Broadband Router w/ 4 port 10/100mpbs switch that should be able to do alot more than i need to do w/ it.

ran network setup wizards on both computers & have em all set up... they just don't see eachother

can i just connect the two directly via a network cable? .... will that work?

EDIT: as far as the DHCP server thing, i think it is... if i go start - run - cmd - c:\ipconfig/all it does have a DHCP server ID. they are the same on both computers

..most important of all, have you disabled the internet firewall on both machines and shared the drives? My guess is you're lookin at the router to blame. The problem is you have not setup the PCs to share files and see each other.

            Try this link

One of the handy features of Windows XP (and Windows 2000, for that matter) compared to earlier Windows versions like 95/98/Me is its support for user-level

            Good Luck Petter

Each computer sharing needs to have installed the file sharing protocol and the microsoft windows client.

Next, each computer should be in the same IP network - meaning all computers should have an IP address like 192.168.1.xxx where the XXX is the only part of the IP that changes.

Next, each computer needs to be able to communicate with the others. Check this by using ping. Goto a computer, figure out its IP by going to start -> run -> cmd <push enter>. Then type ipconfig. This should tell you the IP address for your computer (lets say for example the IP is 192.168.1.101). Goto another computer, run the same command to make sure its in the same IP network (we'll say this computer is 192.168.1.102). Then, do start->run->cmd <push enter>. Then type ping 192.168.1.101. That will ping the IP address .101 from the ip address .102. If it is successful, then the computers can communicate and file sharing should work (as long as you have something shared...). Try opening up internet explorer, and typing \\192.168.1.101 in the address bar to access the shares on that particular computer.

If for some reason, not all your computers are in the same network, ensure that your router has the DHCP server enabled, and all computers are set to "obtain IP automatically". You can goto start->run->cmd and type "ipconfig release" and "ipconfig renew" to tell the computer to grab a new IP from the router.

i am a guru, so this is going to get figured out =)

i'm really suprised i haven't gotten this crap to work yet... all i wanna do is get the files, email contacts & windows settings onto the new computer... my dad was the one that wanted to setup the network neighborhood between my computer & his... unfortunately he's still running Win '98

They don´t need to be DHCP ip numbers,,
you can set them yourself if you like they just need to belong to the same subnet,,

If you can ping them then it´s a protocol, sharing issues,

do they belong to the same workgroup ??
if you run this "\\oldcomputer-ip-address" in the run windows what happenes,
did you get a explorer windows showing a folder and possibly a printers folder
if so you have got that computer working, do the same to the other one, and you should be there,

you first step is to put them on the same subnet,
then share some folders and issue permission to the user from the other computer as well as yours,, then you need to check on the local machine if the settings are working i.e to open the computer by using \\ipnumber
same with the other one, then you are done,

get back to us if that didn´t work

1st you are setting up a LAN, not a WAN.

So you can ping, and you have the ip address.

Did you turn on file sharing for both computers?

Go to DOS, and type "net start"
                            Then "net use F: \\ipaddress\share
Don't use any passwords for the share, and on XP you can just right click on the folders and then sharing to share them.

You can also try to do a "computer search" and find the NAME of the other computer and then map a network drive.

                            OR
right click on the network icon, select "map network drive"
then put in the \\ip\share and pick a drive letter.

Remember, if you have nothing shared, you will NOT be able to connect unless you use XP hidden drive admin share, and I'm not going into that.

Good luck!! It might be easer to get a external HD and move the data that way.

                              same bloody thing :P

static IP addresses are an option, but if you are able to ping your other computers then that won't solve anything.

can you ping your router? it's probably at 192.168.0.1

I'm guessing you have something else setup wrong.

oh, and there is no "DOS" in Win2k/XP. "command" gives you an emulated dos shell, "cmd" gives you the NT32 command line shell.
