91 318is value?

Hey everyone, I’m looking to get back in an E30 and found what looks to be a very clean 318is. I just want to get some opinions on what it’s worth. Body looks clean, black sport interior, style 5 wheels and slick top. Seller says they have about 15k in receipts. He’s asking $6500. Does this sound ok for a clean looking 318? Pics look good but I have to drive 3hrs to check it out. Any suggestions on what to be on the look out for?

It's probably where they are right now, but I strongly suspect that the E30 market will soften next year, so don't pay full price now unless you plan to keep it for a few years.

Rust, especially around the battery box, listen for M42 clatter as timing chain rebuilds are dear, ask what's been serviced in that department, see if it revs cleanly to redline as a good M42 should really come "on cam" up high, check to see if the mess under the intake work has been done, if not expect vacuum leaks.

I know which one you're are talking about. If it fits the description, it is absolutely worth $6500 given the mileage. I contacted the owner as well. I was thinking about flipping it but don't feel like going all the way out to Texas.

The guy in Dallas is a very strange seller and there's some rust on the rear of the car that's hard to get him to talk about. Still might be worth the money

The red one in college station looks like a bit of a turd if you ask me. Pictures are pretty low res and grainy, but I see plenty I don't like. I have a feeling that is a 20 footer, and the closer you get the more disappointed you'll be you made the drive.

The white slick top in Dallas has gaping rust holes in the rear valance and battery tray area the guy outright refuses to acknowledge, which I find pretty comical. That's its biggest obvious demerit, but if it has it there you know there is more underneath.

went tonight to see red slicktop in college station....needless to say i passed on the car, it has been painted poorly in more of a imola red color, wavy bodywork and numerous dings, ebay coilovers, rust in the trunk valley and left 1/4 glass frame, the kiddy stance has destroyed both front fenders, no way in hell its a 86k mile car, i personally think its more like 200k , interior is edgy, dash dented above glovebox, its been jacked up incorrectly on the rockers .....and this is what i picked in the dark, overall its still a slicktop, still has value, just not 6500.00.....personally its worth 4000.00

i was wondering that too. personally, i don't see it unless we hit a HUGE recession

I think we have a large number of "nice" (prices rising rapidly), and average (prices dropping slowly) E30s for sale presently at their respective price points. So it's just a supply demand thing. Further, three years of strong and increasing niche, yet common, car values probably means the market is ready to move to another chassis for some time.

Haven't seriously analyzed the market, but have also seen E36 M3s return to sane prices in the last 6 months so I suspect a bubble type trend.

Don't freak out, and sell your E30s now or wait, just not on my say so either way.
