N55 was never put in the E60. I prefer the N54, no valvetronic to worry about & they do get wear & stiff movement requiring the motor & eccentric shaft to be replaced.
The latter N62tu v8's do not seam to have as many valve stem seal leaks as the early cars, but they may pop up as milage increases. The v8 cars just get expensive to maintain, same with the turbo cars. Unless you know the expensive parts have recently been replaced best to stay with a N/A 6. The n52K in the 528 was available for the longest so you will have the most options. Oil leaks, crankcase vents & vanos issues & starters are the main issues they have.
