    E60 n54 vs e60 m54

    Time to settle for something newer. Can’t decide from the 535i vs the m54 530i manual. Has to be sport package & manual. I hope the power bug doesn’t bite this car. Already on planning on upgrading the iDrive because oem fuckboy & pretty much it. I know it won’t do much but zhp cams would be cool I guess but then might as well get a 535i. Something better to daily on. Any opinions?

    Why not a 530i N52? It's better than the M54 but without the issues of a turbo car.

      Agree with Nando, n54 has too many problems, m54 is a bastard child and underpowered.

        There are a LOT of bastard children running around...
        ...and in B30 guise, they don't suck.

        If you put them in an E30.
        That'd make it a bastardized bastard, no?

          I'm a fan of the m54, it's one of the most reliable engines BMW ever built. I have 310k on the b25 in my e46. Early e60 m54 cars are getting hard to find in good shape. The n54 makes good power even in stock form, the fuel pump & injector issues have been solved, but they are beginning to have issues with the bearings & turbos seals. The n52k is probably your best bet, with an intake swap & tune they make 260 hp. Keep the oil changed to reduce vanos issues.

            You guys are right, gotta step it up and live more dangerously. I’ve just worked with too many newer bmws that were neglected like for example the plastic coolant hose that goes across the radiator and etc could go on forever. But in the end, the e30 will always be waiting for me if the e60 brakes down.

                      They are cheaper, and for good reason...the N62 and N63 engines have numerous reliability issues. Currently looking for an early E70 X5 for the wife, and N52 3.0i models sell for more than a 4.8i, especially at the auction.

                            Sure, they're hard to beat - for the most posts about how much it costs to keep them running or how often they're broken. :p

                            also, yes, V8s are cool - but modern BMW V8s are shit. I mean, our N62 powered X5 has been OK so far, but realistically, unless you're well versed in BMW software Voodoo Magic, you'd best stay far, far away..
