He is NOT "half" kidding. I have YEARS of experience in wrenching in general, have taken apart and reassembled so damn many weird things...I broke my new(ish) windshield putting my new lockstrip back in.
Pay a pro.

Just take your time. I did it on my old '86 325 front and back and on my current 325iC (much easier since there is no back trim!). All I used was a very thin screwdriver to pry up the rubber slightly and some soapy water to lube everything up. Put the new lock cap in place first then slide the lock stip in on one side of it and start to work your way around the windshield. Once you get to the other side, slide the trim into the lock cap before tucking the final 6 inches of the trim under the rubber.
Man, I've tried countless times to put the side trim on my back side windows. Been running without it for a year and a half.
I did the front and the back, and it was so warped that they don't touch, they shrank. But they're in.
IT SUCKS. Get someone else to do it. Every place I go to is scared shitless for some reason to do it, lazy bastards. Also, that link explains REMOVING the side trim, not putting it back on.
I picked up the trim today & I will attempt to do it myself prior to paying a windshield installer to do it. We'll see...
You'll need a lockstrip installation tool. The best one for the e30 is actually designed for a late-80's Dodge van. You'll need to file the inside of the tool so that it will work correctly with the BMW strip.
Yup, I had half of it completed on the rear glass, BUT then I noticed the chrome underneath the trim look like crap. If I am going to go through the trouble them it best look good. Dealer has reordered the upper piece. Install wasn't too bad. I was using what my local BMW Center calls a "bone" to install it.
