new cars of all makes (including my brothers E46 from which I have lots of experience) arent designed to last too long beyond warranty without a good amount of problems which require a fair amount of money.

I guess it's all relative. These ARE BMWs of course, and they will need more attention than a Honda. But I still don't forsee any major issues that will prevent the car from going past 300k. There are people on E46 fanatics well into the 150k range with no major problems. I believe that most of the problems we hear about are the result of kids modding their cars and then beating the crap out of them.
Personally, my E46 only has 84k. Time will tell how it holds up.
If anyone thinks modern BMWs are bad, look at the maintence for a Wrangler. Think 1970s era American truck, and you have a good idea of what it entails. I always maintain my vehicles well, and usually I can get a long life out of them without too many problems.
This was taken at the dealer, but tomorrow I'll get some good ones up. Its an 01 325Ci, Premium pack, leather, mooroof, steptronic, cd, 5 spoke alloys, fog lights, auto climate control, etc.
