Since you'll be going through everything on the car, start with a beater. Don't spend 3-4k for a decent car. Get a good body for 1K and use the money you saved for the mods. I think you have a great plan laid out. IMO, if you are patient, shop hard enough, and do the work yourself, you can probably accomplish your goal for 10k. Good luck.

I have it completely itemized out already, similar the order you described (suspension first, etc) basically with the most abundant parts coming first, as I expect the tougher fin find parts to take some time to get ahold of ,it just wasn't pretty to post that way :). Also, Though I will have the cash in hand in september, that doesn't mean I'll just drop a ton and do it all at once. I will blow through 16k faster than I can whip my head if I do that. This will take some shopping, no doubt about it.Originally posted by Robwhat gabe said. also, you need to itemize the priorities. Decide whats most important, and do that first. Nothing is more annoying than having a car that has 7 different projects all half-finished.
If it were me, I go in this order, and I'dcomplete a project before starting the next : Suspension, learn to drive, brakes, learn to drive, wheels/tires, learn to drive, bodywork cosmetic, interior shit, then lastly the motor/HP stuff. With doing all you're doing, getting distracted and forgetting the really important minute details will be really easy if you dont plan correctly.[/b]
A tricky part will definitely come into play (as Jim mentioned) with FINDING the car. Just from market value, it's looking like a 91 318iS in beater condition would do the job. The car doesn't need to have years and years left on the engine, I just need to be able to drive it for about 9 months (if I even pick the car up in the fall. Again, if time permits....and tara wont be too pissed....maybe I'll pick just a chassis up later, since a TON of stuff is going to be replaced anyway, in theory the car doesn't even need an engine)
Thanks for the comments. Jon, glad you can see it from my angle ;)

hmm going $8,000 into debt to build a toy? :?
it's your life buddy.. Personally I refuse to buy anything for my car unless I have cash. It only took me 2 years to rack up 7g in debt and it's taking me about 4 to pay it off..Comment

Thanks for the concern. I already discussed it with Rob, it's not debt that a credit agency will chase me down if I miss a payment, and I will have it all paid off within a year (I make ~20k/year after taxes with virtually no living expenses, and am on a full ride scholarship for this year, and hopefully next).Originally posted by nandohmm going $8,000 into debt to build a toy? :?

well if you can pay it off soon I suppose it's no big deal.. just hope nothing happens where you aren't able to work. I'm used to paying bills, rent, etc so $8k in debt seems like a lot :)Comment

Yeah I can see that. I will come in stages too, so it's not like this fall I suddenly drop 16k. Most certainly if I did that I wouldn't even be able to make my mark anyway.Originally posted by nandowell if you can pay it off soon I suppose it's no big deal.. just hope nothing happens where you aren't able to work.
