I drove around a bit this morning and went through some big puddles, driving the 318. I do not advise this of course. I will assume the electrical is what would get you or if ypou flood the exhaust pipe but they make snorkles for that!!!
Oh boy...anything below bumper height is theoretically safe for the intake, if taken very slowly. Faster speeds will generate a 'wave' that can reach the intake height.
However...I see these fording attempts a couple times a year working as an insurance appraiser. If you suck water into the intake, it only takes a few seconds to suck enough to lunch your engine.
WARNING! SCIENCE CONTENT: Water, unlike air, does not compress. You fill a cylinder with water and the crankshaft turning the piston will make space somewhere. The usual culprit is a bent connecting rod, though I've seen holes in blocks too.
Not worth the risk. One personal experience I had was making a fording attempt in a Honda. Decided (correctly) that the water was too deep and tried to reverse out. However, when your clutch area gets full of water, the clutch doesn't work so well. Several inches of water on the floor by the time I got the thing towed out.
holy isht that puddle on the tacoma side of the narrows bridge gets gnarly. I was driving the Z and the front lip went under the water and forced a fucking tsunami over the whole car. luckily nothing bad came of it. I saw a S2000 off of rustin that got hydrolocked- shittiness
luckily i get my truck back today, so if it get worse.. chevy ridin high boi,
