What year did they start having the wind deflector? My '84 doesn't have one. I have to crack a window if I'm going over 25 or else it sounds like I'm under a helicopter.
84 318i's don't have that piece. The sunroof mechanism is slightly different and its not because they're crank s.roofs either. I guess it was just revised after that to reduce cabin noise.

uhh so how exactly did your sunroof panel get ripped off? You must have had all the screws loose or missing. I can't imagine that peice just coming off (especially while it's closed).

the sunroof isn't really that bad to work on, but you'll need to be able to open and close it to get it apart. E30s are pretty easy to hotwire from what I hear, all you really need to do is look in the bentley and read the wiring schematics to figure out how :P

The wind deflector you're thinking of didn't come stock on any E30's if I understand correctly. I'm pretty sure that had to be added by the owner, possibly something to buy at the dealership when the car was purchased or something?
wrong wind deflector, this one is part of the sunroom assembly, its a tiny little black flap at tthe very front of the tracks
Yeah, that's what I meant to talk about. But, I know what you mean... ;) :D

I did find one screw in the ash tray, painter must have not put it in when he reinstalled the roof. All the other screws were locktited into their holes and still attached to the panel. The actual black plastic track peices were broken off. I don't know what the hell would cause it but all I can do is deal with it now. My buddy is going to look at it tommorow and see what he can do about welding it in. It may be a bit of a pain since there is a gap. I'm thinking I might have to fab up a bracket to weld onto the underside of the panel then weld that to the car. I'll have to see.
