Soooo, anyone familar with Indiana traffic laws.

Basic story is i was speeding on the highway, unsure my speed, in the 70mph range though last i looked at it when passing the cop. I just maintain my speed since i'm already busted and figure i might have a chance of ditching him, unfortionately not, and unfortiontately i'm afraid if i take it to court he will mention i tried getting away because i kind of did. Anyway, he gives me a ticket for 86 in a 55, okay, no big deal, $110 ticket, but what burns me is he gave me a ticket for "Disreguarding automatic traffic light", which i don't consider doing, i saw his lights come on and i turned right from the light on to the shoulder.

I've been reading different state court systems have different laws, so if anyone is familar with them or could provide helpful links, i'd much appreciate it, i can't afford a $220 ticket right now, even knocking it down would be great.

The ticket has nothing saying his radar got me, just says "Speeding 86 in a 55", but i'm not too worried about that ticket, plus in Indiana, all tickets are $110, so i can't get the fine reduced (which is kind of retarded...)

I know i shouldn't be complaining too much considering these tickets are actually pretty cheap, but the cost of living here is pretty low and most people ain't too bright.

It was a state cop, i'm hoping he might just not show up due to being in another city or something. The spot for my signature says "Copy Given", soooo, what's that supposed to mean?

    Any help is appreciated.

I don't know about Indiana, but in many states a certain amount over the limit becomes reckless driving or the equivalent. In Illinois, more than 30 over the limit (86-55=31 - cop was definitely a prick - a nice guy would have put 84mph) it become a serious ticket worth getting a lawyer for. For that reason, I tend to stay within 30mph of the speed limit on the highways (different rules apply for secondary roads).

Normally, for $220 it wouldn't be worth getting a lawyer, but are you SURE its only going to be $220? It be might be worse, so spend some money and talk to a local lawyer.

I think it's 25 over here actually, but i'm not positive, it says on the form 26 and over are not elligable for a defferal.

I got another for 86 in a 65 which was 21 over and that was that state's law, i was actually doing around 75-80 according to my speedometer, he gave my buddy a ticket for exactly 86 over as well (makes you think, huh?), but i paid it, $180 in Ohio, but i didn't want to mess with the $60 in gas it would've taken me to get there to likely just get a reduced fine and have it balance out.

im not 100% positive but here in PA 26 mph over is an automatic suspension. so if i were you id just be glad with what you got. but then again im not sure of how your laws work so this is a really pointless post. (delete if you feel the need)

Yeah, that's one thing i'm worried about, if i try to fight it and get in it worse. I don't disagree with the speeding ticket like i said, yeah, i was speeding, maybe not 86, last i looked at my speedometer i was doing around 75ish and slowing down because i spotted cop headlights. Whatever, fine is the same for 5 over as it is with 25 over for some reason, nothing there to argue, but my problem is the ticket he gave me for "disreguarding the automated signal" =\.

After a bit of googling, it looks like 36 or more over is where you need a lawyer. However, 26 to 35 is still pretty expensive according to this link (different county but probably the same rules).. Given that and the other offense, talking to a lawyer might be cheaper and keep your record cleaner too.

here in wonderful(yeah right) california my last speeding ticket (in oct) cost me $365, i was doing 84mph in a 45mph zone "unsafe speed for prevailing conditions" but didnt get my license suspended just restricted for 60 days, and didnt need a lawyer. my latest speeding ticket i was doing 102mph in a 55mph zone (marin county sucks) and it was "excessive speed over 100mph". but i still dont need a lawyer. BTW im fighting it because my speedo said 95mph and he didnt want to show me the radar/laser gun readout. but anywhoo sorry for the OT rant good luck with the ticket:-?

"Need" is a strange word. You didn't "need" a lawyer, but you now have a restricted license and paid $365 for that priviledge. A lawyer could have gotten you away clean and probably for less money. Remember, judges are just lawyers farther in their career paths, so they tend to be less harsh on those offenders that are helping their lawyer friends.

I have some good news, i was reviewing everything for errors and discovered when writing my address he put the wrong zip code, he wrote 47804 insted of 47805.

                    Eh, eh?

I'm still wondering about "Copy Given" in the spot for my signature.

well there are cases where you "need" a lawyer. the cop cut me a break and didnt cite me for reckless driving, if he would have then i would have been arrested right on the spot, my car would have been towed, and when i went to court i would "NEED" an attorny:D . reckless driving is a bit more of a serious offense.

Up here, errors like the postal code or lack of signature make no difference. The signing is just a formality.

Thankfully i'm not in Canada though!

Kidding, just out of curiousity, how do you like it there? Going off topic in my own post. :P I'm considering moving to Canada though, seems like a nice place, very, very little crime.

Last ticket I got while a cop was pacing me was dropped because thats not a real method to determine speed.
I think having a lawyer, and being able to produce a copy of your friends ticket will be able to create some questions (Like why is everyone speeding at EXACTLY enough to get bumped up into a bigger ticket when there isn't even a radar gun)

As for failing to yield to an automated signal or whatever, you pulled over as soon as you noticed the cop and it was safe to do so. Slamming the breaks at "86 mph" is dangerous.
