i should of started this thread in a tech subforum, but didn't think I'd have so many questions. Regarding the shift linkage, I've removed #10, do I need to remove #1? If so, how does one go about it, both ends aren't very easy to see, let alone get a wrench into.
Remove the nut #9 to get #8 out. You will still need to remove the shifter though. That is not too hard to do. Just take two flat head screw drivers and turn them counter clockwise and then pull the shifter out.
Or take off #3, but that cam be a bitch sometimes. Try #3 first, if it does not come off, the first way I said should be pretty good for you.

Take off driveshaft nuts at guibo/tranny, take off 2 csb nuts, let it hang to get it off the tranny, then put them back on after getting the front of the driveshaft off the tranny output so it's not hanging (I use a wire hanger to hang it level just to not put any stress on it just to be safe)
I take off #10 from the C-clips.
Take #9 off (13mm).
Then to get #3 off I use my load leveler to point the front of the engine up and the rear down and use a flathead screwdriver to wiggle it out and then the whole shifter assembly is out. That's also a good time to take off the clutch slave cylinder since the top nut is somewhat tricky to get to with the tranny level.
Taking out an engine isn't hard, just the more of an angle you have the faster you can do it.
Wow, didn't mean to do so much of a mini writeup, but there ya go.
Thanks Devo, it's been an interesting couple days, learning as I go. I'm sure I'm taking entirely too long, but I'm taking my time to figure things out as I go.
uggh i just spent two hours on that stupid #3 and got nowhere. I have the tranny support brace off, and the tranny tilted down an inch or two and still nothing. Bent one screwdriver, blunted two nosepickers (radiator hose pick), and it hasn't budged. Why is it necessary to remove #1 anways, wont it pull out of the rear hole when you pull the engine/tranny combo?
Next I guess I'll remove all that heatshielding and get at #9.
I got the three nuts off the guibo, but once I remove the heatshield and the csb nuts, is there enough play in the driveshaft to pull it apart from the tranny output?
Dateline: Salem, OR. Joshua Brown has conquered his first bitch clip.
Mary mother of god was that a pain in the ass. Bitch clip is understatement of the year. Finally was able to do it after studying another instruction on how to do it : http://www.unofficialbmw.com/e36/dri...itch_clip.html
update: driveshaft is dropped, shifter assembly is out, clutch slave and flex line are out, a/c compressor is out.
Looks to be ready to pick tomorrow. After some searching I finally found the rear tranny flange engine hoist point. Went to harbor freight and bought a load leveler, going to NAPA in the morning to get some beefy bolts/washers/nuts to mount the chains of the leveler to the two engine lift points. Hope to get pics and not drop an engine on the front clip or any humans. Will update.
Came out of the car today, here are some horrible pics that make me look like a momo, but it was freezing and getting dark so I wanted to hurry up the photoshoot and get the obligatory pic inside engine bay. My buddy Justin donated the engine hoist and the moral support -- he's the big bald guy.
