    So I got the 95 M3 rack... I think

So I order a 95 M3 rack about 4 months ago. After out of stock parts, incorrect parts, delays, mishaps, clusterfucks, etc... I finally received a "95 M3 steering rack". It looks like one, smells like one, and tastes like one.

    Why does it only turn 2.5 times lock to lock? Z3 is 2.7, 95 M3 is 3.0, 96-99 M3 is 3.2

Bob from Eurasian assured me he finally located a 95 M3 rack and had the company he ordered it from absolutely positively verify that this is a 95 M3 rack from a 95 M3.

I guess I'll compare the overall movement with a stock rack and insure it's actually moving the same distance. If so, and this rack does indeed have the same mounting dimensions as a e36 rack, what the hell is it from?

You're right, a '95 M3 rack should have 3.0 turns L2L. 2.5 is really, REALLY short. Are you sure?

I put a '95 M3 rack in my car. It feels great, can't get enough of it and it was indeed 3.0 turns L2L.

Check the serial number it came from and match it with what car it came off of. I got my M3 rack from Eurasian as well and it was perfect. I hope you don't have a jam or something inside the rack...

Maybe it has a steering angle limiter built in? This is a common upgrade to prevent the wheels from rubbing the inner fender liners. I'm not sure it would limit travel that severely though. You can check by pulling the rack boots back and looking at each end of the steering shaft.

That got me thinking. The lines were capped, and fluid remaining in the rack could have "locked" it shorter because there is nowhere for the fluid to go. But it felt like a mechanical stop, it was fairly abrubt as I was turning it. I will mess with it more tonight, I was way too tired last night.

I doubt I'll be able to get the serial number for the car. I don't even know where Eurasian got the rack from.

I guess it could have a limiter, I'll pull the boots off as a last resort option. They still have nice clamps on that I was gonna leave on haha. I originally paid for this rack months ago when I had money. Now I'm so broke it's not even funny. I don't even know if I can afford the spacers to install it haha.

        Thanks

Good luck with the rack, I look forward to hearing how it turns out!

I'd love to do this upgrade but everywhere I look it says "For cars with an airbag you'll need to do some fabrication at the firewall." Fabrication of WHAT???

Yeah, you need to clearance the firewall about 1/4" so that the steering shaft doesn't hit. Other than that, it bolts in. P/S hoses depend on which engine you have.

It's a 3.0 turn lock to lock rack, the boot was hanging up on the tie rod and not allowing it to go the whole way to one side. It's been sitting for a while...

I cleaned it up and it looks like new. Can't wait to get it installed.

Won't be a mess. My current rack is capped, no P/S. This rack will be the same. Filled with Redline ATF and capped off. Actually, it won't be capped, I run a hose between the connections so there's no pressure when the wheel is turned the whole way.

The e36 tie rods are so beefy compared to e30 rods! Not that it really matters...
