Seriously though, an X5 is just a lifted 5er with more room and uses more gas. the thing performs amazingly! It feels like a sport sedan, not an SAV/SUV.

Actually, X5s have significantly less room than the 5 series touring.
I like them, but I would much rather get a 540i touring and convert to a 6-speed if I needed a bigger car.
X5 3.0 = meh
X5 4.4 = i'd deal :D
X5 4.6iS = Pretty fast (though Cayenne turbos royally fucking scare me after riding in one)
X5 4.8iS = You just have to show you're a baller, huh?
The X5's are a decent enough SUV, but have absolutely atrocious build quality.
Tranny's going out seems to be the big thing, I know of 3 people that have had to replace 2 tranny's on the truck within 500 miles. Lot of suspension component issues as well, the 3.0's seem to have a lot more issues than the 4.4's as well.
I used to share your view on the E46, but after working at BMW and getting extensive driving time in other competitors, I can honestly say the E46 is a bargain. It provides everything the average person could ever want, is built rock solid, and still is very fun to drive.
I'd take even a baselevel 04 325i over any entry level car from Benz, Acura, Infiniti, or Lexus. Of course, I'd aim for a 01 or 02 330.
If something ever happens to my E30 it will either be an E36 M3/4 or a E46 330i.
