I used to share your view on the E46, but after working at BMW and getting extensive driving time in other competitors, I can honestly say the E46 is a bargain. It provides everything the average person could ever want, is built rock solid, and still is very fun to drive.

I'd take even a baselevel 04 325i over any entry level car from Benz, Acura, Infiniti, or Lexus. Of course, I'd aim for a 01 or 02 330.

If something ever happens to my E30 it will either be an E36 M3/4 or a E46 330i.
I'll second that, I'm really starting to warm up to the e46. You can get the performance package on the 330Ci now, so I might snag one of those off lease in a few years. Seeing as most of the e36 M3's out there are being kiddie-driven and run into the ground, it will probably be a safer bet to go with anyway.

Perf Pack (ZHP) 330i's are the business (so long as you over look some of the idle-quality issues people have been having). Heck, even Sport Package 330i's with the M-Tech kit look bad arse.

I'll take mine in Imola with the Natural Brown interior, or maybe Silver Gray with the Black Alcantra. The fuzzy alcantra steering wheel = BLING :)

The 330Ci's are pretty nice looking cars. I've always liked the front spoiler on them, very aggressive looking.

And considering how many pics I've seen of e46's HAMMERED on dubs, you could get some major BLING

330Ci ZHP (perf pkg) looks like this (thank BMW USA for the small pic). Personally, I like the M-tech II (yes thats right) front better. M3-esque.

I was going to lease one, then I decided on this E30 project.

5 years, 75k miles, $410 month, no maintenance, just gas it and go.

                            I'd rather own something

Yes, you'll notice I didn't post that pic, because it looks like ASS. I like the first gen E46, before the lame-ass facelift.
