Mileage, and Gas mileage?

it's sad that a completely anemic motor like the 1.6l M40 doesn't fair much better fuel economy than the M42. maybe it's the increased efficiency of the 16 valve head?

That might even be the carb'd 1.6 liter M10... that is pretty good for mountain roads with such a gutless motor...

Mileage and Floggability

This got me thinking..


My eta has about 240,000 miles on it (trip broke before I bought it at around 234,000). And it still gets about 25-27mpg HW.

And granted, it has the powerband of a diesel and never sees high revs, but thing pulls hard, and runs great. I cant help but lay into the throttle every time and run it all the way to 5300 every now and then.

So how many miles do you guys have on your car, and how hard do you drive it?

Yep, it's a carbed M10. It does much better in the flats, and at city driving, but on highway speeds and climbing it's not very good ;) .

The power to weight ratio sucks. and you have to keep it around 4000 to 5000 rpms to get some pull, it behaves like a two stroke, revs fast and pulls a lot better in high rpms. :p

109,600 on my 533i, and I get 27mpg combined... Scary. I get 30 or better on the highway.

damn, i knew something was a miss with my old 533. I would get 19mpg at best, so i sold it..haha.

318is gets 28 - 30mpg mostly city, but i beat on it constantly. Oh it hs 143k.

the 84 318i with damn near 200k has a] a broken odometer, b] a jumpy speedo, and c] a hole in the gas tank that will not allow me to put anymore then 10 gallons in it.

These broken odometers can be easily fixed. There is a little gear on the side of the speedo/odometer segment of the cluster that seems to break and/or fall apart. I was able to replace that gear by going to my local hobby shop and getting a bag of assorted plastic gears for about $15. I had to use a small drill bit to drill out the center of the gear so that I could fit it on the shaft and it works great.

Oh.. and as far as milage goes I am always driving my car in a "spirited" manner so I am getting roughly 10MPG. I don't think that I ever drive it "normally" enough to get an accurate reading.

How do you guys get 30 on the highway? Is that according to the OBC, or do you calculate?

I get 35 highway calculated in my 318is. Even when I had a real OBC in my 325is & ix, it was pretty damn accurate for giving me milage readings. Never off by more than a couple tenths of a gallon.

wow, you guys get amazing gas milage compared to me. on the way to work there is the best onramp in the world (big long banked S with 3 lanes), on the way home there is a long sweeping onramp. both of those kill my gas milage... not to mention all of the twisty roads around here

All right lets clear things up a chip should not necessarily increase fuel consumption, if anything it should decrease it. Just look at the logic; the average chip requires higher octane fuel, bumps up the timing and does nothing to the injector pulse with. So most of you noticing a decrease, its purely physiological and your probably driving harder with the chip. That said my mileage 23/29 @ 250345 and if were really getting scientific im using 15-40 rotella.

i have 224K KM and get about 800KM per 60liters that roughly 36.5 MPG.... gotta love that TD. and i have some issus with it. like a small fuel leak.. lol

10mpg? Uhhhh...that doesnt sound right AT ALL. I drive the ever-living crap out of my car and I still get 19-20mpg in the city. Somethings not right.

i redline my car very frequently, through first and second gear most of the time. and it stil fires right up. i love it.

'89 325i auto with 114k miles on it. 25mpg highway, sub 20mpg around town (engine barely warms up before I'm at work.) I expect slight better highway mileage when I swap the manual trans in it.

I hope its been said, but check your tire pressure. Mine were quite a bit low, and everything feels better now that they're at proper pressure.
