A 92 Gti came with two engines, a 1.8L 8v featuring digifant electronic fuel injection or the more desirable of the two, the 2.0 16v with CIS Motronic. More than likely the one you are looking at is an 8v, which in 92 was basically a "nicer" golf. They have rear drum brakes, ugly seats, ugly larger plastic bumpers, and the same engine as the regular golf. The Digifant fuel injection will require almost no maintenance, with the exception of oil changes, etc. They did have an update at one point or another for beefing up the engine ground wires. The VW 8v has got to be one of the most bullet-proof engines I have ever had. The last golf I had was from the mid west and was rusted to hell and back. The engine had about 160K on the clock and there was nothing I could do to destroy it. I've had tons of these cars and have never had an engine fail, or require anything major for that matter. My brother is currently trying to kill an 86 wolfsburg jetta, which after repeatedly jumping it, hitting a deer, redlining it at every shift, tearing down gravel roads, and auto cross it just won't give up. I say buy it, check the coolant flanges for signs of leakage and make sure it has a fresh t-belt/ waterpump.

If you are looking for a second car I would snap it up. Mk2s FTW! I think it would be a great little car to beat around town in. Plus when work needs to be done to it, its not a huge leap in mechanical know how to figure out how VWs work vs BMWs.

I love my jetta for a DD, its a 2.slow which I wanted, gets amazing mileage, and I can pack a ton of crap into the trunk and in the car. After driving e30's for so long the interior space seems huge lol.

Unless you have the time to devote to both your E30 & this, forget it. VW's are a ton of work - I've owned at least 10, and I'm done save diesels. I might pick up one of those if gas outpaces diesel costs over the next 5 years.

In that price range, if it's a 2.0 16v, part it if you can get it for <$800. OEM Rec's fronts are at least $350, 16v rear seat is worth $150, interior panels another $150, disc rears are $100, core motor & trans $200, headlights & grill $75, ft. bumper skin $50.

If it's a 1.8 8v - drive the snot out of it once you change the timing belt.

It's not how you handle the good times, but the faith you keep in the bad that defines you.
