I dont think you guys understand how safe nuclear power is in the United States. And in the upcoming years it will be come the only power source. Give it 30 more years and all power plants will be nuclear.

True, there will never be a Chernobyl in the US; the reactors are protected greatly. However, there is still the issue of the waste and what to do with it. I'm sure the guys on this board from Washington are familiar with what a mess Hanford still is. There is massive radioactive waste surrounding the entire facility. There are high levels or radioactive isotopes in the ground and vegetation.

And in the upcoming years it will be come the only power source. Give it 30 more years and all power plants will be nuclear.

In my opinion, fission is not a viable option for the future. However, fusion, if it is ever mastered, will definitely be a wonderous breakthrough in energy production.

My wife and I drove past it coming home from out honeymoon. I never knew there was one in Oregon, let alone one that large. It made me feel ill.

i didnt read through the whole story as i was pressed for time but is there a strong radiation level still there? is it dangerous to "tour" through it like she did?

they should really teach us about that tragidy in school. im gona graduate this year and i cant remember one time that it was brough up.

That's about 40 min south of me (LA area), just about half way to San Diego. Right on the beach as you drive down the coast.

My dad works at the plant in Columbia, SC. If you want to get technical, the plant is located in Jenkinsville. He wears a sensor on his name tag that measures how much, if any, radiation he has been exposed to. They haven't had any major problems the 25yrs he has worked there.

unfortunately (or fortunately?), this is not true. for one, there is only an 80 year supply of fuel for nuclear plants left, and secondly nuclear plants are extremely costly to build and maintain. The remaining plants will probably operate until we run out of fuel, then they will have to figure out how to clean up the mess.

Hopefully they'll figure out how to contain a fusion reaction in the next 20 years.

My astronomy professor worked at the Hanford site for 20 years, I wonder what he'd think of these very creepy images.

wow, i've alwasy loved that kind of history, its great(or bad) to see real time photos, of that place, i am almost tempted to visit that place...jesus, that was a big ass screw up.

btw i'm thankfully i live in british columbia....pretty much all hydropower, a few oil/gas power plants...if i recal the oly nuclear plants in canada are located in ontario.

That's freaky, we had an old research place on the south shore of Mass that I used to roam thru, used to find ammo shells all the time.

Wampatuck State Park by any chance?

I used to check out those places all the time a few years ago. Pretty crazy stuff.

Neither, ARCO research site in Middleboro Mass, it bordered Halifax and Bridgewater. I used to cycle and run at Wampatuck. That is a nice statepark now but I wonder how safe the ground water is in area being it was an old US Army sight.

PCB's galore. There is also a former Nike missle sight in Scituate near Fourth Cliff. Now it's a USAF Camp grounds.

Its funny that no one else noticed (at least, didnt post about it) that this Ukranian woman writes about 10x better that most Americans on this site. Living in Europe for two years, I saw a lot of that. Most of them speak more eloquently than most native english speakers I know (including me!). Just some food for thought.
